SUMMARY

  • Narrators are one of the most crucial aspects of a video game and television series.
  • However, in the case of Amazon Prime's Fallout TV series, many believe the narration led to plot holes.
  • However, Fallout's creator believes unreliable narrators are an integral part of the Fallout experience.

Let’s be honest, narration is one of the most crucial features in a video game and TV show. When we don’t know anything about the territory of a new world, it’s quite helpful to have a voice to guide us and give us valuable insight into the narrative.

However, Fallout TV series fans have been debating over the show’s plot and timeline discrepancies. They believe that all of this comes from the inconsistent narration. However, the franchise’s creator believes that the “unreliable narration” is one of Fallout‘s strongest suits.

Fallout creator believes unreliable narration is crucial

Ever since Amazon Prime’s Fallout Season 1 premiered last year, there’s been a huge argument among fans over timeline issues with Fallout: New Vegas. In episode 6 of the series, fans saw that “The Fall of Shady Sands” was written on a chalkboard, and that event took place in 2277.

Fans believed that if Shady Sands was wrecked in 2277, that would completely retcon New Vegas as that event takes place four years before the events of the game. However, Fallout‘s creator, Tim Cain, has joined in the argument with his own YouTube video where he reviews the show.

According to Cain, all the dates mentioned in the game might be incorrect, but this could be on purpose. We all know that in the world of Fallout, misinformation and propaganda are common, especially from groups such as Vault-Tec. Seriously, they’ve deceived people in the worst way possible.

Maybe Fallout: New Vegas, some of the characters in that game, got the dates wrong. There’s no master calendar you can refer to… Fallout has a history in a lot of the games of having people tell you something that isn’t true.

He goes on to point out that Fallout as a franchise has always used “unreliable narrators.” Characters tend to pass on completely wrong or misleading information on purpose. Since the post-apocalyptic title doesn’t have a universal system for recording history, it’s natural to be fed the wrong knowledge.

The element of unreliability of facts and information adds uncertainty to the Fallout franchise, which keeps players on the edge of their seats looking for answers. While it might’ve not been perfectly done in Amazon Prime’s show, it’s one of the core points for Bethesda and its post-apocalyptic franchise.

When is Fallout season 2 coming out?

We already know that the next Fallout game is still years away from release as Bethesda and Todd Howard are busy making The Elder Scrolls 6. The next game in the post-apocalyptic franchise won’t hit the shelves until the 2030s, and that, too, depends on what kind of development cycle the studio follows.

That leaves the Amazon Prime TV show to look forward to. While it’s confirmed that a season 2 is happening, we still don’t have a release date. Filming for the next season has just started. The production for the first season took eight months, and then it premiered 13 months after the camera stopped rolling.

While a second season might be quicker in terms of production, we can expect it to finish in the middle of 2025 and then season 2 to air a year later. There’s a high chance that the show the next season of the post-apocalyptic franchise could air in early-to-mid 2026.
