It’s a well-established fact that Super Earth’s bold Helldivers fear nothing. They are capable of absolutely destroying the all enemy factions in Helldivers 2. However, they have one embarrassing weakness: they can’t swim. Since day one, Arrowhead Game Studios hasn’t integrated swimming mechanics into the game, but there is a good reason behind it.
Johan Pilestedt, Chief Creative Officer of Arrowhead Game Studios, often interacts with Helldivers 2 fans on social media to understand what Arrowhead can improve to make the game more exciting. Pilestedt recently explained the reason why Helldivers are not capable of swimming, and it actually makes sense.
Johan Pilestedt explained why you can’t swim in Helldivers 2
Recently, a Helldivers 2 player on X asked Johan Pilestedt, the CCO of Arrowhead Game Studios, if the studio would ever introduce an 8-player co-op mode. Pilestedt explained that currently, it’s difficult to develop such a system. However, it is not impossible, implying that such a system could be integrated into the third Helldivers game.
When a player joked that the third Helldivers game would also feature swimming, Pilestedt explained why players can’t swim in Helldivers 2. He said,
The simple explanation behind this is that Helldivers just can’t swim because of all the gear they are carrying. This makes sense as all those support Stratagems are quite heavy and swimming in them would be quite difficult. Developers at Arrowhead, especially Johan Pilestedt, have certainly thought this through as he has been in such situations.
Some of Helldivers 2‘s elements are inspired by Johan Pilestedt’s time in the military
In a past interaction with a fan on Reddit, Johan Pilestedt revealed that he had fought on the frontlines as a soldier. A player claimed that the Ammo Booster should be removed because no trained soldier of democracy would go on a battle with no ammo. As a response, Pilestedt explained the difference between issued ammo and the ammo discovered on the battlefield.
Many have admitted that Pilestedt’s efforts are one of the main reasons why Helldivers 2 was initially a hit. Unfortunately, the game lost most of its fanbase due to nerfs and a lack of new content. Over the past few months, Arrowhead has been determined to make Helldivers 2 great again, and clearly, it has succeeded. The Omens of Tyranny update has boosted its active player count, making it one of the most popular co-op games in the world once again.
