Every Lantern Corps Oath, Ranked Worst to Best

The spectrum of the Lantern Corps gave DC Comics one of its best world-building tools. Hope, greed, love, compassion, rage, and more themes are explored through these warriors. Nine Lanterns, with widely different priorities and feelings, channel their energy into their power rings and use their battle chants when they go to fight. 

However, not all are as well-thought-out as the classics. Lantern Corps oaths are like poetry, but some do not even try. Here are all the oaths from the spectrum of Lanterns and how they stack up against each other.

9 Orange Lantern Corps’ Oath Has Just One Word Repeated

It is hard to root for greed. The Orange Lantern Corps chose greed as their primary force, and their oath is right on the money about that. Larfleeze, a.k.a. Agent Orange, primarily took the oath: ‘What’s mine is mine and mine and mine. And mine and mine and mine! Not yours’. Shakespeare would be rolling in his grave.

What else can we expect from a corps that uses greed as their driving force? It will be centered around individual possession and not about uniting for a singular cause. In that way, it is a perfect representative. However, they could have been more creative with their chant.

8 The White Lanterns Barely Have an Oath

The White Lanterns represent life and the full emotional spectrum. They canonically do not have an Oath. When Sinestro briefly took on the White power ring, he simply said, ‘Live’. However, he also improvised a short line, taking on the classic Green Lantern Corps’ oath. It says, ‘In Brightest Day there will be light. To cleanse the soul and set the wrongs right. When darkness falls, look to the skies. A new dawn comes, let there be light’.

While it is a pretty decent attempt, it is not the official oath of the Corps and was just an improvisation by its most popular wielder. Despite being one of the most positive Lantern Corps in the spectrum, they remain at the bottom because of their lack of an oath.

7 Indigo Lanterns’ Oath Transcends Spoken Language

The Indigo Tribe’s chant is delivered in an invented, untranslated language, which is a clever way to signal that compassion transcends spoken words. Nobody knows what it means, and hence, the readers also have no idea what their oath means.

It is an interesting creative swing, tying the oath’s mystery to the tribe’s mysterious, silent nature, but as a memorable rallying cry it undercuts itself by being deliberately unintelligible to the audience reading it.

6 The Black Lantern Corps Get a Creepy Oath

Death by nature is disturbing, and the Black Lantern Corps use their death force and oath to induce that creepy vibe. Their lines are dramatic, indicating certain doom, and not only do they feed off of it, but they also invoke it. Their oath says, ‘The Blackest night falls from the skies. The darkness grows as all light dies. We crave your hearts and demise. By my black hand, the dead shall rise.’

It is a chilling thing to root for and gives imagery of an apocalypse. As an oath, it is pretty poetic and visually appealing. Hence, it ranks around the middle.

5 Star Sapphires Turn Love into Obsession

The Star Sapphires’ oath frames love as a possessive, almost desperate force, inviting the recruit to accept the ring and join the fight, which mirrors the corps’ original, controversial framing of love as obsession before later writers softened that angle. 

The oath says, ‘For hearts long lost and full of fright. For those alone in the blackest night. Accept our ring and join our fight. Love conquers all with violet light’.

It is punchy and has real emotional stakes, ranking comfortably in the top half, but its shorter length and narrower thematic focus keep it from reaching the drama of the entries above it. 

4 Red Lanterns Have Rage Spewing Across Their Oath

The Red Lanterns, led by Atrocitus, are very rageful and vengeful in their oath. Their battle cry is one of the few ones that actually puts fear in the hearts of their enemies, as it speaks about ripping hearts from corpses and burning everyone. The oath says, ‘With blood and rage of crimson red. Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead. Together with our hellish hate. We will burn you all, that is your fate’.

The words feel like anger and rage, and the feeling you get while just reading it is bone-chilling and uncomfortable. As a written work, the oath is incredible and makes you feel what it wants you to feel. It is just not as hopeful as some of the others.

3 The Yellow Lanterns’ Oath Mirrors The Green Lanterns

The Sinestro Corps oath is a masterclass in menace, promising death, destruction, and fear made manifest, delivered with the same rhythmic cadence as the Green Lantern original as a deliberate, chilling mirror. The oath says, ‘In blackest day, in brightest night, beware your fears made into light. Let those who try to stop what’s right. Burn like my power, Sinestro’s might’.

That callback is what elevates it.  It is not just a villain’s boast but a direct thematic inversion of heroism itself.

2   Green Lantern Corps Wrote the Template for Oaths

The Green Lantern Corps invented the oath. All others are just inversions and perversions of the same. The power ring uses willpower as its main power source, and the lines echo it perfectly. No other oath comes close to the impact it has, and it only ranks second because the top spot invokes hope as a guiding light.

The Green Lantern Corps oath says, ‘In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s light, beware my power. Green Lantern’s light’.

Every other oath has twisted the words to mean something for themselves, but this one remains the classic.

1 The Blue Lantern Corps’ Oath Uses Hope as a Guiding Light

The Blue Lantern oath is short, warm, and forward-looking, emphasizing hope’s power to endure even when everything else has been lost, and its brevity feels intentional rather than lazy. 

The oath says, ‘In fearful day, in raging night. With strong hearts full, our souls ignite. When all seems lost in the War of Light. Look to the stars, for hope burns bright’. It is the only one of the spectrum that does not boast of its own power but encourages everyone to see hope.

Hope is a quieter emotion than rage or fear, and the oath matches that tone instead of overselling it. It earns a high spot for restraint and thematic accuracy.
