Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible.
With Invincible Season 4 having released all its episodes, audiences and fans can have a look back at the season to evaluate the various episodes that were put out by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racciopa, and Amazon Prime Video.
Perhaps the season that changed the landscape of the universe the most, Season 4, had some pretty pivotal events. Be it the death of Thaedus or the deal that Mark struck with Thragg, Season 4 saw some of the biggest changes to the status quo of the Invincible universe.
However, this season also had the first filler episode of the entire show, which felt like an unsatisfactory payout after the tease that the storyline received at the tail end of Season 3. Keeping that in mind, here are the eight episodes of Invincible Season 4, ranked against each other. The idea here is to see what the episode brought to the table, how engaging the storyline was, and what it managed to do for the wider continuity of the story. A focus is also put on action, animation, and plot development.

8 “Hurm” – Original Story, But Filler All Along
Damien Darkblood with The Great Beast in Invincible Season 3 || Credit: Prime VideoAfter Season 3, this was the storyline that a lot of fans were excited for. However, even after the storyline received a full episode, it was disappointing to see that it was just filler. Given how tightly paced and plot-oriented the entire show was until this moment, several fans were expecting that the original storyline in question could be something that has an impact on the wider story.
However, what fans ended up receiving was a side plot that did not do anything to further the story, but killed time until the real story could get started. It remains to be seen if this story is revisited in future seasons, but it seems unlikely that Damien Darkblood is going to have a bigger role than he has already had.
7 “I Gotta Get Some Air”– Low Stakes, Character Story In Action Series
Mark and Oliver || Credit: Prime Video After the season premiere, which saw Mark deliberately decide to take a life, Episode 3 was more about reorienting audiences to the world than anything. I Gotta Get Some Air was hugely consequential for Robot and Monster Girl’s story, but fans will clearly have to wait till Season 5 to see any of the things planted here to bear fruit.
Mostly reinforcing that Mark is going to take a very different approach to people messing with his family, something that was already said pretty bluntly in Season 3’s finale, and then reinforced in the premiere, felt more like the calm before the storm. The only high point of the story seemed to be the screentime that Oliver received, but even that left something to be desired.
6 “You Look Horrible“- Viltrumite War? More ‘Viltrumite Scuffle’
Thragg and the Viltrumites fleeing || Credit: Prime Video Ranking this episode in the bottom three of an eight-episode season might be unfair. After all, the show did the same thing with the Invincible war, and it came up as one of the best episodes of the season. The episode mostly suffers from not being able to depict the war with as much weight as it deserved. Further, this was the first look that audiences had of Grand Regent Thragg, and the impact that this monolith of a character had fell short.
The character was called childish, and perhaps not all that fit to lead the Viltrumites. While later episodes would fix that, the show could have depicted the war with a little more gravitas, which felt completely glossed over instead. While there were moments to appreciate, such as Nolan bonding with Oliver, the fact that the episode came at the time that it did soured the praise that it could have gotten, even without making the changes that it sorely needed.
5 “Making The World A Better Place“- A Brilliant Opening To The Season
Rus Livingston in his final moments || Credit: Prime Video Making The World A Better Place was a great premiere episode. Not only was it a good reintroduction to the world, but it was also an important stepping stone for the rest of the season. It cemented Mark as a very different character from the previous season, one who was not about deliberately making the choice to kill a threat, regardless of the consequences. This put everyone from the Guardians of the Globe to Cecil on high alert, given how easily Mark made the choice.
The only reason why the episode is so low on the list is because of the developments that later episodes made. This was a solid episode, no doubt, but it came in a season chock full of them.
4 “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour” – Original Content That Enhanced The Story
Allen and Nolan || Credit: Prime Video Episode 2 was a great buddy-cop type short film with Allen and Nolan. While they traveled the galaxy, looking for the various weapons and entities that could aid in the Viltrumite War, fans received quite the flashback about Nolan’s past. A wholly original addition to the story, absent from the comics, and possibly canon-breaking due to several reasons, the episode’s first fifteen minutes or so really made you feel sorry for Viltrumites, despite all the carnage that they would cause later.
However, the rest of the episode was much lighter in tone. and was setting up the big emotional beats for Episode 6. It was fun to spend time with Nolan and Allen, as they toured the galaxy and introduced the audience to the wider Universe of Invincible. This episode was a classic Space Opera adventure and was able to depict how much Nolan has changed. Further, it also introduced possibly the most important plot device in the entire show- The Scourge Virus.
3 “Don’t Do Anything Rash” – Finally Letting Thragg Live Up To His Name
Grand Regent Thragg || Credit: Prime Video After the episode that came before, there was a major misreading about Thragg’s character. People not familiar with the source material thought that Thragg was perhaps not as big a villain as people were making him out to be. However, when Episode 7 debuted, all that chatter was put to rest. Invincible depicted a villain that was equal parts ruthless, cunning, mature, and surprisingly, caring. What fans witnessed was how thoroughly outclassed the Coalition of Planets was when dealing with Thragg.
Providing the big confrontation that fans wanted to see from the war, Episode 7 was able to really depict the menace that Thragg was, and how far Mark and even Nolan had to go before they could stand up to the Viltrumite threat that the Universe was facing collectively.
2 “Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here“- A Subtle Finale With A Massive Cliffhanger
Mark on his way back to Earth || Credit: Prime Video Not the usual finale that fans have come to expect from the show, this was legitimately the first fight that Invincible lost. Previous seasons saw the character duking it out with the likes of Conquest, Anissa, and his own father, but Mark had come a long way since being beaten. When defeated other times, Mark would get back up. However, how do you ‘get back up’ from this? He saved his people. He saved the Viltrumites. However, whatever monstrous horrors they visit on the Universe a few thousand years down the line are going to be on him.
What makes matters worse is that independently, Allen receives Thaedus’ final orders from beyond the grave. He must use the Scourge Virus to wipe out the Viltrumites, who have now settled on Earth. Thaedus also reveals in his message that the virus could affect humans as well. Mark has already chosen his people over Viltrumite extinction. The episode leaves the obvious question hanging in the air- Will Mark do it again?
1 “Give Us A Moment” – Putting The Name ‘Invincible’ To The Test
The best episode that the Season had to offer, perhaps overshadowing the entire show, was Episode 6. Nolan returned to Earth and got whooped by Debbie. There was no apology that he could give that would have fixed everything he did. Then, with Mark and Oliver joining the war, audiences thought they were in for a very different story. However, when Conquest reappears, all hell breaks loose.
For a moment, it seems that the Coalition’s forces, despite having a Viltrumite, Unopan super soldier, Geldarian Tech Jacket, and two Viltrumite Half-breeds, might be outmatched…until Mark decides to take on Conquest alone and relents even when the Viltrumite starts pulling out his intestines. It does not get gorier than this, and it honestly, it does not get more Invincible than this either.
The episode takes the thesis, themes, and motifs that Invincible, as a show, explores, and then presents them in a microcosm. It does every beat that is employed right, and leaves a lot for every kind of Invincible fan there is.
| Ranking (Worst to Best) | Episode Name | Episode No. |
| #8 | Hurm | Episode 4 |
| #7 | I Gotta Get Some Air | Episode 3 |
| #6 | You Look Horrible | Episode 6 |
| #5 | Making The World A Better Place | Episode 1 |
| #4 | I’ll Give You the Grand Tour | Episode 2 |
| #3 | Don’t Do Anything Rash | Episode 7 |
| #2 | Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here | Episode 8 |
| #1 | Give Us A Moment | Episode 5 |
Season 4 answered a lot of questions that Season 3 had, but it opened up questions about the wider Invincible universe that are likely going to be answered not just in Season 5, but also beyond. Given that there was a lot of original content in the show, it would have been very easy to end the season with Invincible killing Conquest.
However, kudos to the creative team; they chose exactly the right cliffhanger for the season. Now, there are several unanswered questions that may once again change the status quo of the story, but that is pretty normal for a subversive show like Invincible.
Are Monster Girl and Robot still stuck in the Flaxan dimension?
Yes. Cecil has been trying to rescue the duo by getting D.A. Sinclaire to work o interdimensional tech. However, all attempts to bring them back have ended in disaster.
Why did Debbie go to Talescria with Nolan?
Debbie decided to go to Talescria to look after Oliver, who was injured in the war against Thragg and the other Viltrumites.
When will Season 5 of Invincible debut?
Invincible Season 5 had been confirmed before Season 4 aired. However, no concrete date has yet been confirmed.
What does Thragg intend to do on Earth?
Thragg has made Earth into a Viltrumite haven, where his underlings, all 37 that have survived so far, must sire children and multiply, so that Thragg may lead the new Viltrum Empire in the conquest of the universe.
