Every Green Lantern Voice Actor in Official DCAU History, Ranked

1 week ago 21

Green Lantern is not the easiest character to cast, especially in animation, because the role requires warmth as well as will, and it should be evident in the voice. However, the DC Animated Universe, a.k.a. DCAU, has made some right choices just like they did with Kevin Conroy in Batman: The Animated Series.

The following list shows voice actors who voiced various iterations of the Green Lantern strictly in the official DCAU, which begins with BTAS and runs through 2019’s Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. While there was a Green Lantern: The Animated Series that aired in between, it falls under the official DCAU continuity and therefore will not be considered.

Here are all the DCAU Green Lantern voice actors, ranked.

10 Tom Kenny as Salaak Had a Minor Role

Tom Kenny is known for being the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, but in Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, he voices the bookkeeper of the Lantern Corps, Salaak. While he is uncredited for the role, he actually voices the role of Bloodsport in the film, playing the main antagonist. Since it is a minor role, and even in that, it is an uncredited appearance for the voice actor, he ranks last.

9 Adam Baldwin Only Had a One-Off Appearance in the DCAU

Adam Baldwin is more popular for his role as the Green Lantern in Injustice: Gods Among Us and as Superman himself in Superman: Doomsday. However, the actor actually made his Lantern debut in Justice League: Unlimited, where he portrayed Hal Jordan in the episode, ‘The Once and Future Thing: Part Two’. Unlimited, however, has John Stewart as a regular Lantern.

Though Baldwin’s performance is decent, he ranks last purely due to his screen time in the DCAU being extremely limited. He was only there in one episode, and that was one of the most stacked episodes in the series, which was already filled with DC heroes. He also voiced the villain Bonk in the same episode.

8 Michael P. Greco’s Kyle Rayner Was Confident for a Debut

Michael P. Greco earns fourth place for introducing the DCAU’s first Green Lantern. In the Superman: The Animated Series episode ‘In Brightest Day…,’ his Kyle Rayner is a Daily Planet artist who is chosen by the ring and defeats Sinestro with Superman’s help.

The role was his voice acting debut, which makes his confident performance more impressive. However, the character was later recast with Will Friedle, and Greco never returned, so his influence remained limited to one memorable origin story.

7 Will Friedle Gave Rayner’s Green Lantern a Livelier Voice

Kyle Rayner returned in Justice League Unlimited, in the episode aptly titled ‘The Return’. Will Friedle replaced Greco in the episode and gave the character a livelier and youthful tone, making him more lovable. The character redesign also fit more into how the character looked in the comics, and hence was more appealing to the fans.

Friedle is beloved as Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond, so casting him brought credibility and warmth. He edges out Greco with a stronger connection to the DCAU. Still, one appearance keeps him below the other performers with larger Lantern roles.

6 Kim Mai Guest Made Katma Tui a Quiet Powerhouse

Kim Mai Guest voiced Katma Tui in the Justice League episode ‘Hearts and Minds: Part II’. Katma is a veteran Corps member, and Guest plays her as composed and no-nonsense against the Flash’s banter. Katma even mentions ‘that Rayner kid,’ a nod to Kyle Rayner’s DCAU debut. Her appearance is brief, but it gives the Corps some depth beyond the human Lanterns.

5. Kevin Michael Richardson Brought Kilowog to the Fatal Five

Kevin Michael Richardson voices the Corps’ famously gruff drill instructor Kilowog in Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, alongside a separate role as Mr. Terrific. His Kilowog is a supporting player in a film built around Jessica Cruz, so the part is smaller than the ones above it. Richardson has voiced Kilowog elsewhere too, but only this appearance counts here.

4. Dennis Haysbert Was the First Kilowog Outside the Comics

Dennis Haysbert was the first actor to portray Kilowog outside the comics, voicing him in Justice League, including ‘In Blackest Night’, and Justice League Unlimited. His deep, commanding voice suits the Corps’ toughest trainer. He ranks above Richardson because he defined the character on screen and appeared across both series.

3 Lauren Tom Voiced Kai-Ro and Dana Tan in Batman Beyond

Lauren Tom is best known for her role as Dana Tan in Batman Beyond, which is her regular part. However, she also voiced Kai-Ro in Batman Beyond and later in Justice League Unlimited. The young Green Lantern is often seen as Hal Jordan’s sidekick, but he becomes a major part of the JL in the futuristic world of Batman Beyond.

Tom gives Kai-Ro serenity and quiet wisdom, a striking contrast to hotheaded teammates like Warhawk and Big Barda. Her multiple appearances and original character outrank one-episode Lanterns. However, Kai-Ro is not as popular as John Stewart.

2 Diane Guerrero’s Lantern Carried Justice League vs. the Fatal Five

Diane Guerrero takes second place because her Jessica Cruz anchors an entire feature film. In Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, time-traveling villains hunt the rookie Lantern, and Guerrero plays her as hesitant, human, and gradually brave beside veterans like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

No other DCAU Lantern actor carried one of the best animated Justice League films this way. However, the film is a late entry that borrows the Justice League look, and one story keeps her below LaMarr’s long run.

1 Phil LaMarr Defined John Stewart Green Lantern For Years

Phil LaMarr’s John Stewart became the definitive version of Green Lantern for the DCAU and for the character in general. We now see Aaron Pierre give a face to the character, but LaMarr’s voice was all fans had for years. The voice actor portrayed Green Lantern for years, through Justice League, Static Shock, and Justice League Unlimited.

LaMarr delivered a disciplined former Marine with dry humor and unshakable resolve. The performance mattered so much that DC later adjusted the comic book character to match the cartoon, including the military background. No one voiced the character to perfection like Phil LaMarr.
