Sid Baker survives another brush with death on Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 5, but River Cartwright’s audacious rescue leaves her facing a predicament that even Jackson Lamb might struggle to untangle.
Spoiler Alert !!!
Major spoilers for Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 5 ahead!
Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 4 ended with Jim and Jane abducting Sid after killing JK Coe, while Diana Taverner secretly agreed to sacrifice her to appease the Russians. Episode 5 picks up that unfinished business, exposing the ugly consequences of Diana’s unauthorized intelligence operation in Kazan. River refuses to abandon Sid, even as the people supposedly protecting Britain become complicit in handing her over to its enemies. Elsewhere, Lamb follows a suspicious media mogul’s Russian connections, and the growing conspiracy threatens to drag MI5 into an embarrassing reckoning. With the season’s conclusion approaching, the question is whether River can keep Sid alive when his own superiors have decided she is expendable.
Sid Escapes Jim and Jane, but River Pays a Price
Credit: Apple TVSid’s escape begins with an unlikely weapon: a souvenir registration plate bearing River’s name. While Jim and Jane discuss murdering her to avenge a GRU operative killed in Kazan, Sid strikes Jane with the metal plate, causing their speeding vehicle to crash. She escapes into nearby woodland, although Jim regains consciousness and pursues her. He eventually catches Sid and attempts to drown her in a lake, but River follows the wreckage and intervenes. Their struggle becomes particularly vicious when Jim attacks with a knife, forcing Sid to strike him with a rock before she and River drown him.
I appreciated that Sid wasn’t reduced to another helpless hostage awaiting River’s heroic arrival. Her resourcefulness creates the opportunity to escape, and their eventual teamwork makes Jim’s defeat convincing. MI5 agents subsequently locate the pair, although their apparent rescue offers little reassurance. Jane has disappeared from the overturned vehicle, leaving another trained assassin unaccounted for.
The development also makes Coe’s death in Episode 4 particularly bitter. River saves Sid from the man who murdered their colleague, but the people responsible for the larger conspiracy remain beyond his reach.
Diana’s Kazan Cover-Up Makes Sid Expendable
Credit: Apple TVDiana Taverner’s explanation for the Kazan assassination exposes another spectacular abuse of authority. During questioning by the Limitations Committee, she admits authorizing an operation against a Russian intelligence officer without obtaining government approval. Her funding arrangement creates an even uglier predicament. Diana financed the mission using money previously seized from Peter Judd, unaware that it originated with media magnate Damien Cantor, whose Russian connections eventually exposed her to GRU chief Vassily Raskanov.
The Russians now demand the operative responsible for their colleague’s death, and Diana has conveniently supplied Sid’s identity. Sid had previously survived being shot and was secretly relocated under another name. Diana’s decision to use her identity for the Kazan operation therefore made a supposedly dead agent the target of Russian retaliation. I found Diana’s justification particularly reprehensible because she treats Sid’s survival as an administrative inconvenience. Instead of protecting someone whose identity she compromised, she regards sacrificing her as an acceptable price for keeping the operation concealed.
Jackson Lamb, fortunately, is tracing the financial arrangement from another direction. His investigation connects Cantor to Frank Harkness and introduces Natasha Carrington, an intermediary facilitating the mogul’s lucrative Russian media ambitions. Lamb suspects Natasha possesses intelligence training after she evades his surveillance. That suspicion remains unconfirmed, although Cantor’s dealings suggest the conspiracy reaches considerably further than the assassins pursuing Sid.
Is Sid Alive After River’s Rescue?
Credit: Apple TVYes, Sid survives Episode 5, although River must betray MI5’s orders to prevent her from being delivered to the Russians. Diana arranges her transfer aboard a private aircraft, claiming that Sid will spend several months in Moscow before returning home. Yet the flight is bound for Bulgaria, and Diana knows the destination offers little reason to expect Sid’s safe return. The deception is particularly galling because Sid has already survived two assassination attempts, only to discover that her own government intends to finish the job.
River refuses to accept the arrangement. After sharing a long-awaited kiss, he commandeers an airfield maintenance vehicle and helps Sid escape toward the surrounding countryside. Rather than accompany her, he returns to surrender himself, buying her additional time to disappear. Their romantic development was overdue, although I wish it hadn’t required another imminent execution to make them acknowledge their feelings.
The episode ends without confirming where Sid will go, whether MI5 will recapture her, or what punishment awaits River for defying Diana. Jane also remains alive and unaccounted for, making Sid’s freedom precarious. I suspect River’s decision will force Lamb into another confrontation with Taverner, especially now that he understands the financial scandal behind the Kazan operation. Diana may control the official machinery, but her increasingly desperate attempts to conceal the truth have given Lamb plenty of ammunition.
Can River protect Sid after openly defying MI5, or will Diana’s bargain finally catch up with them? Share your theories below, and follow FandomWire for more recaps and ending explainers.
