Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: “Ándale”

HBO Max’s Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1, titled “Ándale,” starts a third and final season that FandomWire critic Sean Boelman says “takes some ambitious swings both narratively and stylistically that are admirable — not to mention enough to keep viewers invested to see what happens next.” And after watching the season premiere, we can see why.

One of our favorite characters, Rue Bennett (Zendaya), returns in Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1 on a wild adventure I am not sure even Jack Kerouac would have thought of. Illegally driving her old Jeep Cherokee across the desert. In a scene ripped from the headlines, Rue attempts to drive her car over a 14-foot-tall metal fence with four metal ramps equipped on each side.

However, when she reaches the top, the car gets stuck. Rue gets out, leaving a bag in the back. She walks down the ramp, leaving the car parked on top. HBO Max’s Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1: Why is Ruth a Drug Smuggler?

After graduating, Laurie (Martha Kelly) approaches Rue about the money she owes, which is around ten thousand dollars. However, since the older woman has placed an astronomical interest rate on the loan, over 20%, she says that Ruth now owes a little over forty million dollars, give or take. However, she will accept a cool $100,000. This forces Rue to quit her day job and become a drug mule.

Rue partners with Faye (Chloe Cherry) to smuggle balloons of heroin or cocaine. To do this, Rue and Faye swallow about one kilogram of the substance, roughly 150 balloons, into their stomachs. It’s a very dangerous yet lucrative job, as we see when one young woman dies after a single balloon ruptures. The show graphically depicts how the drugs are recovered.

After the delivery, Rue and Faye hang out with Laurie and her family, including her cousin Harlin and son Wayne (Babyteeth’s Toby Wallace), who Ruth thinks may be inbred. Later, she leaves to visit Lexi (Maude Apatow), who is Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) younger sister. Lexia is the friend that Ruth turns to when she needs help, taking advantage of her.

Rue tells her that Fez (Angus Cloud) is asking about her and is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence. However, she says she works too much to contact him. Lexi works in Hollywood on a daytime soap. Her boss, Patty Lance (Sharon Stone), is a legend. Lexi serves as her assistant, running errands and grabbing coffee for the staff. Cassie, though, is living her best life.

Nate (Jacob Elordi) doesn’t want his fiancée to be TikTok famous. He comes home and finds his housekeeper taking pictures of Cassie, dressed in lingerie, with a dog’s tail, ears, and nose, drinking water and eating from a pet dish. Nate isn’t happy about it, noticing dirty dishes still in the sink, until he orders Cassie to “come,” telling her she has been a bad, bad uh, dog.

This is all in an effort so Cassie can have the wedding she wants without cutting corners. Cassie wants to make money off her body. Cassie equates an OnlyFans account as a way to form a deeper connection with her. Meanwhile, her sister Lexi is in love with Dylan Reid, the heartthrob of L.A. Nights. Yet, all Rue can think about is the religious family that took her in after leaving her car teetering on that border fence.

Rue talks about this over dinner with Ali (Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo), who appears to be her sponsor. Her obsession with his family, who remain grounded in their religious beliefs while Rue is surrounded by distractions, is intoxicating. Ali serves as a sounding board for her fears. She plans to read the Bible cover to cover and take it as fact to figure out her life.

Rue then delivers some drugs to Alamo’s (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). She drops them off at his associate, Bishop (Darrell Britt). Rue asks to use the bathroom but ends up dancing, drinking, and doing drugs. He is about to escort her out when Alamo tells Bishop to stop. He brings her over, where the strip club proprietor tells Rue how disrespectful she was for failing to introduce herself.

Nathan and Cassie come to an understanding that she will not have a “ghetto” wedding. We come to find out that any floral arrangement under fifty thousand dollars is her definition of nuptials that are beneath her. She tells Nathan she will finance her dream with OnlyFans. Nathan, at first, says no, but is convinced when she says she will not show full frontal nudity with her beautiful face on the site.

Euphoria season 3, episode 2, “Ándale,” ends with God seemingly believing in Rue when Alamo shoots a Granny Smith apple off the top of her head with a gold-plated hand cannon. The drugs Rue delivered to Alamo were laced with fentanyl, and one or two of his strippers died as a result. When he questions Rue, she tells him the entire story of how she became a drug mule.

She believes meeting Alamo was God’s will. Alamo puts that to the test, and she survives the gunshot as his target practice. As she laughs maniacally and drops to her knees, the episode ends.
