EDITORIAL: CBC supports women – just not the sassy ones

The Sydney Sweeney controversy highlights the hypocrisy of those on the left who profess to promote women’s rights.

The outrage directed at actress Sydney Sweeney over a provocative ad for Novig, an online sports prediction service, surely highlights the hypocrisy of those on the left who profess to promote women’s rights.

CBC recently dedicated a large chunk of its flagship newscast, The National, to a segment wherein female athletes decried Sweeney’s overt use of her physical attributes to drum up business for Novig, a company in which she has shares.

Novig isn’t available in Canada, doesn’t advertise here, and is only accessible to users who are physically located in U.S. states where it is regulated by the U.S. Commodities Futures Trading Commission. But never let a story’s relevance deter the sanctimonious prigs at CBC from manufacturing faux rage towards women of whom they disapprove.

Sweeney has a tantalizing propensity for unabashedly displaying her lady bits in ads. She’s making heaps of money out of it, so congratulations to her for showing initiative.

In the Novig video, she’s pictured deshabille, in a basketball hoop and holding footballs that strategically cover some – but not all – of her breasts. (Last year, Sweeney aced a lie detector test for Vanity Fair to affirm her breasts are real. An examiner confirmed she’s telling the truth about their authenticity.)

This doesn’t fit the left-wing CBC worldview. A young woman who flaunts her considerable assets in order to succeed in a man’s world gets a tut-tut from our state broadcaster.

It puts the lie to the much ballyhooed ethos, “my body, my choice.”

Wasn’t that catchphrase “bodily autonomy” supposed to be a rallying cry for women who wanted to reclaim their bodies? Or does that really mean bodily autonomy only for women who want to drive trucks or toss a discus? If you’re Sweeney and you want to commercialize your god-given natural advantages, you’re letting down the female side.

We’re told not to judge biological men who wish to compete against women in elite sports. But oh boy. If a female actress wants to demonstrate her femininity and make a few bucks, CBC will sneer from on high.

Sweeney has been accused of “sexualizing sport.” Really? Surely that ship sailed with women’s beach volleyball at the Olympics. If Sweeney or women’s volleyball players wish to flaunt their curves, well, it’s their bodies – their choice.
