Dragon Ball Super 2: Goku’s First Official Non-Super Saiyan Form Breaks 35-Year Tradition

Goku has spent over three decades defining his power through Super Saiyan, but Dragon Ball Super 2 is about to break that streak for good. Once the anime reaches the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Goku finally locks down Perfected Ultra Instinct against Moro, and it’s not just another power spike.

This marks the first time Goku‘s hair changes color from a form that has nothing to do with the Super Saiyan bloodline at all. Ultra Instinct was built by Akira Toriyama as its own thing entirely, and Dragon Ball Super 2 is finally about to prove it on screen.

Every big power-up Goku has pulled off since Super Saiyan first flipped his hair gold in 1991 has run through the same doorway: go Super Saiyan, then find a new shade to push past it. Blue hair, red hair, extra muscle, whatever, it’s all been variations on one bloodline power for 35 years straight. Dragon Ball Super 2 changes that math completely once Goku faces down Moro at the end of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga.

After Merus sacrifices himself to weaken the villain, Goku finally stops leaning on rage the way a Saiyan always does, and that’s the exact moment Perfected Ultra Instinct locks into place. His hair turns silver, his eyes shift into a pale blue-grey, and for the first time, none of it traces back to the Super Saiyan lineage at all. That distinction matters more than it looks on the page. Toriyama has gone on record saying Ultra Instinct was designed from scratch to be separate from Super Saiyan, not a remix of it.

Even Super Saiyan God, which also swaps out Goku’s hair, only exists because five Saiyans pooled their energy into a ritual, so it’s still fundamentally a Saiyan trick wearing a god’s name. Perfected Ultra Instinct doesn’t care about bloodlines whatsoever, and it’s even described in-series as a “state of the gods” rather than a transformation. It’s a technique, plain and simple, one Goku earns through discipline instead of DNA, and Dragon Ball Super 2 is set to make that split impossible to ignore the moment it hits screens.

Goku’s New Skill Tree Has Nothing to Do With Being a Saiyan

Here’s the part that should get fans buzzing once season 2 of the anime gets there: Perfected Ultra Instinct isn’t a stronger Goku; it’s a different Goku entirely. Every earlier form sharpened his instincts as a fighter who hits harder and gets angrier. This one strips all of that away and replaces it with total calm, letting his body react to danger before his brain even catches up.

Merus spends the whole back half of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga drilling that mindset into him, and it pays off in the wildest way possible: a towering ki avatar that Goku summons when Moro corners him, something no Super Saiyan form has ever come close to producing. Vegeta gets his own arc-defining answer to this a bit later with Ultra Ego, but that path stays tied to destruction energy and, by extension, sticks close to how Saiyans have always fought.

Goku’s road is the opposite, and the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga even proves it isn’t exclusive to him. Master Roshi again gets his own brief flash of Ultra Instinct during this arc, after showing similar symptoms during the Tournament of Power, which would be unthinkable for a Super Saiyan since Roshi isn’t even a Saiyan.

Once Dragon Ball Super 2 puts Perfected Ultra Instinct on screen, it confirms Goku has quietly built a whole separate power system that owes nothing to being a Saiyan, and that’s a genuinely new lane for a character who’s been running the same one since Dragon Ball Z first aired. It’s also just the beginning, since Goku pushes the technique even further into True Ultra Instinct once the Granolah the Survivor Saga rolls around.
