Dang! Season 1 Ending Explained: Will Ruthie’s Parents Ever Forgive Her?

Netflix‘s Dang! just released its debut season, and it explores a very valid theme in Asian-American households. The show tells the story of the Dang siblings, two of whom are in New York and never measure up to their overachieving eldest sister, Ruthie. However, things change when Ruthie tells them that she is pregnant with someone else’s child.

The entire series sees the three siblings reconnect as Ruthie deals with making a mistake and falling in her parents’ eyes. In the final episode, Ruthie decides to come clean to her parents and enlists her siblings to accompany her to Boston for support. After a lot of drama and hiding, Ruthie’s secret is finally revealed to her family’s circle. However, on the bus ride home, Ruthie’s mother reconnects with her, hinting that everything is not ruined yet.

Andrew and Eunice Accompany Ruthie Back Home to Boston

In the pilot episode of the show, Andrew and Eunice Dang are shown to be the underachieving members of the family. Andrew, despite being the co-founder of his company, is let go because of a data breach scenario, while Eunice makes a living as an OnlyFans creator. However, things change when Ruthie enters the picture.

Ruthie comes to New York and tells her siblings that she broke up with her husband, Warren, and that she had an affair with her colleague, Peter, and is now pregnant. This puts her on the same level of disappointment as Andrew and Eunice. In the season finale, Ruthie takes them both to Boston to support her while she breaks the news to her parents.

Ruthie initially hypes up Eunice and Andrew on their new roles, but their mother still considers Ruthie to be the best of her children. While Andrew and Eunice deal with returning to Boston and worrying about their Boston persona returning, Ruthie tries her best to extend what little time she has with her parents as their favorites.

Ruthie Chickens Out and Throws Her Siblings Under the Bus

As the Dang siblings deal with coming back to Boston and facing their parents, Andrew and Eunice push Ruthie to tell them about her pregnancy and divorce. However, Ruthie chickens out and reveals that Andrew got demoted to head of design in the company he co-founded, while Eunice has only received an unpaid internship and makes money on OnlyFans.

This leads the parents to judge the younger siblings even more and ostracize them to the point where they deny them decent food (for hilarious purposes, of course). Andrew and Eunice get annoyed at being thrown under the bus like that, and while they confront Ruthie about it, the latter reveals that it was a hasty decision and she likes being the favorite.

As the family gets ready for their mother’s performance in a Chinese dance recital, Andrew and Eunice call Warren, Ruthie’s ex-husband, who comes and accidentally reveals the pregnancy to the Dang family.

Dang! Ending Explained: Ruthie Finally Admits Her Pregnancy to Her Parents

Ruthie’s mother does not take the news lightly and decides that they will tell people about the pregnancy and lie that Ruthie will be raising the kid with Warren. The same is announced at the dance recital, much to Ruthie’s anxiety. As the performance proceeds, Andrew and Eunice decide to take one for the team and tell everyone about their jobs.

Ruthie then finally takes the plunge and announces that she is pregnant with Peter’s child and that she and Warren have broken up. As the trio heads back to New York, Ruthie asks Andrew how their parents treated him when he came out to them about his s*xuality. He explains that it took them a long time to reach out, and it was pretty indirect.

As Ruthie worries about the long silence, her mother messages her about a tragedy that happened far away from them and asks about her well-being, just like Andrew predicted. The ending indicates that though the future for the Dang family seems a bit unclear, they are all on pretty good terms by the end.

The ending monologue by Andrew explains a lot about Asian-American households and how the idea of achievement and social identity is important for the diaspora. Something as personal as s*xuality is handled weirdly, but eventually, all gets better.

While there are no explicit hints at a season 2, Ruthie still has her pregnancy and her journey as a single mother—Peter still has not left his wife—all of which might be explored in future seasons. How Asian-American households deal with something like single motherhood could be a theme explored.
