Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers for Crystal Lake Season 1.
Peacock’s Crystal Lake is an eight-episode Friday the 13th prequel from A24, created and written by Brad Caleb Kane. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees in a story that takes place a year after her son Jason drowned. William Catlett plays Sheriff Levon “Lee” Brooks, and Devin Kessler plays his sister Briana.
Throughout the first six episodes, we see how a grief-stricken mother breaks down and starts her killing spree. The central mystery centers around why Jason’s body was never found and who Pamela really is. Then the penultimate episode, Friday…, stops everything and rewinds to the 1950s to answer all of it, leaving the finale, The Final Chapter, to deal with the damage.
The answer is a company called Bellflower Chemical, run by Pam’s husband and Jason’s father, and what it did to Jason long before the lake. Here is what the ending means.
Crystal Lake Finally Explains How Jason Keeps Coming Back
The flashback in Crystal Lake‘s penultimate episode takes us back to the 1950s, when Pamela was a singer, and introduces the man the whole series hinges on. Elias Wittering, played by Hamish Linklater, is not some shadowy executive. He is her husband and Jason’s father, and he works for Bellflower Chemical.
The episode opens when Pamela starts bleeding while pregnant, and the doctor delivers her bad news. However, Elias intervenes and seemingly wants to find a solution through his company. He brings Pamela into the company’s orbit, and she is enrolled in a treatment programme sold to her as the thing that will make her and the baby strong.
What she sees there should have been the warning. A neighbour in the same trial delivers a stillborn child and takes her own life. The shock sends Pamela into labour, and she surfaces afterwards with no memory of the birth at all. Jason is alive, but deformed and fragile. The experiments do not stop once he is born.
Pamela is slowly put on psychiatric medication and recast as an unfit mother, which conveniently removes her from every decision made about her son. The clues keep surfacing anyway. At Jason’s birthday party, his hair is falling out, and she suspects radiation. His drawings show a yellow door and men in red suits, which furthers her suspicion.
The full answer arrives at a Bellflower gala, where Elias presents Jason as the first success of Project Argonaut, the company’s effort to build a human who can survive the Nuclear Age. The name comes from Jason and the Argonauts, and the Argo’s association with renewal is the show’s explanation for why this particular Jason proves so difficult to kill.
Pamela gets her son out with help from Elias’s secretary. It explains away all the times when Jason was magically reanimated in the franchise movies. He is a superhuman created in a lab.
Why Does Elias Want Jason Back?
Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees in Crystal Lake | Credits: PeacockPamela’s truth gets her some sympathy from Lee and Briana, but he still decides to bring her in for the two murders she committed in the premiere episode. He thinks that this will protect her from Elias and his goons.
However, Elias arrives in town and comes straight to the station searching for Briana. Lee refuses to hand her over, and we see a standoff between the sheriff and Elias’s men. She surrenders to stop the bloodshed, but a shootout leaves Lee wounded, and Elias’s people take her.
In his conversation with Pam, Elias insisted that the experiments had purpose and suggested she was the one who neglected Jason as a baby. Then Jason appears, grown now, wearing a his signature sackcloth from the first two Friday the 13th movies. Elias tries the same pitch on him, promising to bring him home.
However, it doesn’t work on Jason, who kills him. The finale does not let Pamela off either. Jason turns on his mother and only releases her when he feels some of his mother’s old loving memories return. He is then shot in the head by Ralph, but Jason disappears. Pamela warns that these woods are theirs now, which lands as a direct echo of the series premiere.
What Does the Final Campfire Scene Set Up?
Linda Cardellini in a still from Crystal Lake | Credits: PeacockCrystal Lake closes somewhere far more pointed. A young Steve Christy, the owner of the camp from the original movie, is telling a circle of teenagers everything that has happened, insisting Jason is not a boy anymore and possibly not human.
His friends walk away, and Steve follows them, leaving three other friends in the middle of the woods. They are scared about the story they just heard, and a branch cracks behind one of them. The scene then cuts to black. Horror fans will feel that one land.
In another surprising midway twist, we learn that Pamela Voorhees was not the unseen assailant who killed Barry and Claudette, as shown in the original movie. Grace, a friend of Jason, commits those two murders in a drug-induced mania. While there are plenty of other throwbacks to the movies, this one will hit different for fans of the franchise.
Joshua Ryan of FandomWire gave it a 7 and loved the Bates Motel-style approach to Jason’s origin story in our review of Crystal Lake.
