Code Geass is considered to be one of the most beloved anime series in the world. Time and again, the series has consistently introduced characters to its long list of well-written names that have become instant fan favorites. While the series features names that fans absolutely adore watching and can’t get enough of, there are a few names that they detest.
The hate for some characters is justified in the Mecha series, where the fanbase loves to hate Nina Einstein. Interestingly, one name is such a polarising character in the series that would draw away all the negative attention from Nina; it’s none other than Suzaku Kururugi, whose actions often feel like a punch in the gut to its viewers.
However, upon closer inspection, that detest is highly unjustified towards the character because his actions had a more profound impact on the overall plot of the series.
Suzaku Kururugi’s behavior had a deeper meaning in Code Geass’ storyline
Ichirō Ōkouchi’s Code Geass has been absolutely adored by the otakus for the unique presentation of complex themes and morally grey characters that have actively added to the allure of the overall series. While characters like Kallen Kozuki, Shirley Fenette, Lelouch VI Britannia, and so many more enjoy the love from the fans, Suzaku Kururugi has tasted nothing but disdain from the community.
This negative outlook towards the character is so strong that he has become a more loathed character than Nina Einstein, who was a highly flawed character. Sadly, this perspective of the fans is off the mark because, whether you like it or not, Suzaku has played an active role in the overall dynamics of the story.
The character is one of the greatest friends that Lelouch has had, and their interactions in the series go way deeper than what meets the eye. His conflict with Lelouch, where his actions would feel like a personal betrayal.
However, it was his actions that revealed the true intentions of Lelouch, which became the major highlight of the series. Sadly, the fans grew tired of his ardent belief in seeking justice and staying on one side of the fence, where he constantly projects ethics and morals that make him look pretty one-dimensional.
Nevertheless, for the fans, he seemed to be more evil than Nina Einstein, who’s a certified racist and created a nuclear weapon called FLEIJA. To make it worse, she showcases no remorse for her actions and even kills innocents to fulfill her personal grudge.
Code Geass fans defend Suzaku for all the unjustified hate towards him
While it was a major flaw by Ōkouchi-Sensei to repetitively feature only one trait of the character, fans have found it annoying, which over time became the root of all the unjustified hate following Kururugi.
Some fans feel otherwise as the community comes forward on Reddit to clear the misinterpretation following the character. The fans commented,

Had Suzaku not behaved poorly with Lelouch, where their perspectives about morality, justice, and peace constantly clashed, their frustrating reunion later in the series would not have left a lasting impression on its viewers. Thus cementing the anime as an evergreen classic that otakus would constantly return to.
