Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Gets Officially Overtaken by Universal’s New Movie

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan set out to recreate an epic with his 2026 film The Odyssey. Although it has received high praise, it seems that Universal’s latest movie has officially overtaken The Odyssey in one thing: Rotten Tomatoes score. Upon the film’s release, The Odyssey had amassed a total of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although impressive in number, Universal’s latest film, Forgotten Island, seems to have overtaken Nolan’s epic.

Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, Forgotten Island has received a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics (as of September 23, 2026). Officially overtaking Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on the critics’ score, it seems that Forgotten Island might just take the crown. Here’s what the premise of Forgotten Island tells us about the movie.

What Is Forgotten Island About?

Being a DreamWorks Animation film, Forgotten Island is an animated fantasy comedy film directed by Joel Crawford. Set during the 1990s, the film takes place in the Philippines and follows two best friends, Jo and Raissa.

Following an encounter with a mysterious portal, the best-friend duo is transported to Nakali, a fantastical island that is filled with magical creatures. However, it is discovered that the memories of their entire friendship are the price for returning to their home.

Not wanting to forget their friendship, the duo tries to find a way to leave the island before they forget each other forever. With that being said, the critics’ score doesn’t guarantee the film will be a box-office success.

Forgotten Island’s Perfect Score Might Not Be Enough for Box-Office Success

Despite the glowing reviews and praise from critics, there is a possibility that Forgotten Island might just be a dud at the box office. Although DreamWorks Animation is known for its iconic movies, most of its movies work when they are the continuation of a long-running franchise.

Of course, you have the occasional star like The Boss Baby‘s $50.1M opening (via Box Office Mojo) to utter duds like Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. However, one of the biggest visible drawbacks is that marketing for Forgotten Island appears thin.

In short, this looks like a case where critical acclaim and box office success might not correlate with each other.
