Chris Evans Confirms How Robert Downey Jr. Made Him Return for Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans is officially making his long-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, and he credits Robert Downey Jr.’s franchise comeback for making the decision click. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Evans explained that while he was extremely protective of Steve Rogers’ emotional ending in Avengers: Endgame, hearing rumors that Downey was rejoining the MCU alongside director Joe Russo changed everything.

He said:

I got a phone call from my team saying there’s a rumor [Robert Downey Jr. is] talking to Marvel, and I was like, ‘Uh, oh. What does this mean?’And all of a sudden it felt right. [Doomsday co-director Joe Russo] gave me the pitch, and Downey was [back]. It just all of a sudden… it was like, ‘This is it.’

For Evans, the combination of a compelling narrative pitch and the chance to reunite with his former co-star created the perfect alignment, giving him the confidence to finally pick up the shield once again after 8 years for Marvel’s next major crossover event.

Prior to saying yes to Avengers: Doomsday, Evans spent eight years turning down at least a dozen different Captain America ideas from Marvel Studios. These proposals included an early concept pitched by Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito for a standalone Nomad project immediately following Endgame.

Evans continuously passed on every storyline to avoid risking his character’s iconic send-off, waiting until a project genuinely honored that legacy. While discussing the same with Entertainment Weekly, he said:

Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches. And they were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right. And you do start thinking maybe that’s the expiration — whatever it is — maybe it’s not right because it’s just not right.

The breakthrough finally came when Joe Russo presented a pitch that framed Steve Rogers’ return around Downey’s dramatic shift to Doctor Doom. Joining forces under the Russo brothers’ direction provided the exact creative spark Evans had been holding out for, turning a long series of rejections into a resounding yes.

Ultimately, Evans’ return proves that legacy and creative integrity came first throughout his eight-year hiatus. By waiting for the right story and the right partner, his comeback sets the stage for one of the most anticipated moments in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.
