The series is darkly entertaining, exhilarating, and a macabre delight, delivering the pulpy, gripping thrills we have come to expect from its wickedly good source material.

What is Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 about?

The story continues to follow the trials and tribulations of Gotham City, where affluent philanthropist Bruce Wayne (voiced by Hamish Linklater) continues to demonstrate troubling behavior as he socializes throughout a city darker and rainier than Seattle. Wayne has his issues, but the more enemies and allies he makes, the more unintended consequences that begin to follow.

Take where we left off last season, when Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face (Diedrich Bader), died saving Barbara (Krystal Joy Brown) from a bullet fired by the corrupt Flass (Gary Anthony Williams). Wayne, dressed in his Caped Crusader gear, nearly kills him but forces himself not to give in to the darkest parts of his nature. The result is an escalation that suggests the Joker is coming soon.

The aftermath has turned the citizens of Gotham on their heels. Now, Batman is more focused than ever on dismantling the criminal empire that Rupert Thorne (Bojack Horseman‘s Cedric Yarbrough) has built. However, Thorne isn’t the only enemy to crash The Dark Knight’s Gotham party. Wayne also may have to confront Oxy Rocket, Riddler, and possibly the Joker stepping out of the shadows.

Will that mean Carrie Kelley (Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures‘ Juliet Donenfeld) may join Wayne’s loyal and trusted butler, Alfred (The Crown’s Jason Watkins), and his attorney, Fox (Transformers: Animated’s Bumper Robinson), in supporting Bruce Wayne’s mission to protect the citizens of Gotham? Maybe, but not only from masked villains, but also from themselves.

Executive-produced by Hollywood heavyweights J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, along with comic-book legend Ed Brubaker, the DCU animated series is an ominously evocative take that combines the heyday of Tim Burton’s interpretation with the backdrop of Christopher Nolan‘s grounded crime epic to create something almost wholly original.

The animated adaptation is big, bold, almost mythic, and larger than life. The new season expands well beyond the confines of Thorne’s criminal empire, making the fascinating world-building Bruce Timm brings to the series even more brilliant. Timm reinvents and reshapes characters in ways that feel fresh yet nostalgic, all while placing a premium on storytelling and character development, particularly Batman himself.

Is Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 worth watching?

Linklater, so good in streaming series like Midnight Mass and Widow’s Bay, may not rise to the level of Kevin Conroy, as some have suggested, and certainly not to the comedic heights of Will Arnett. However, he brings a psychologically cold and controlled presence unlike anything we have, well, not seen, but heard, before.

You can hear and feel how tightly wound this version of Batman is—obsessively controlled and more comfortable beneath the cape than in the skin of a spoiled rich boy. That is why Batman: Caped Crusader feels like a love letter to fans of Bruce Wayne‘s alter ego. The series takes a deep dive into madness, portraying Bruce as a man who is always standing at its edge.

You never know when he will stop staring into the abyss and finally step across that line for good.
