The story is set in Orïsha, a land where magic once flowed freely through a group of people called the maji. That changed when the cruel King Saran wiped out their powers and killed many of them, including the mother of our hero, Zélie.

Now Zélie, who still carries the gift of magic, sets out on a dangerous quest to bring it back. Along the way, she teams up with her brother Tzain and the king’s own children, Princess Amari and Prince Inan, to fight against Saran’s rule. That core setup matches the book closely, and since Adeyemi co-wrote the script, the main beats should feel familiar to readers.

Still, how faithful the full movie is remains to be seen. Adaptations often change details, and with Adeyemi stepping back from the project, some fans are wondering whether the film strays from her original vision.

Why Tomi Adeyemi Distanced Herself from the Movie?

In a surprising move, author Tomi Adeyemi publicly stepped away from the movie just months before its release. In a since-deleted July 2026 social media post, she said there was “a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work,” but chose not to explain what it was (via The Guardian).

It is also rumored that the author had a falling out with actress Amandla Stenberg, with one alleged text message reading, “Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.” Stenberg’s casting as Princess Amari had kickstarted a colorism debate among some fans. She shut down her critics, and these alleged text messages appear to be around the same time as her response.

Adeyemi later revealed that she had not seen the film and did not plan to, saying it had been painful to hold that back from her readers. Answering a fan, Adeyemi said she was stepping back and officially separating her name from the project because she could not keep being hurt and attacked behind the scenes. She shared:

I do not mind anyone going to watch the film. I wrote this for us. I fought for us. I’m just laying down my sword and officially separating my name because I can’t keep being hurt and attacked behind the scenes.

She never gave the exact reason, but her words hint at creative differences with the team. It’s a shocking turn, especially since she co-wrote the screenplay and spent nearly a decade fighting to get her book onto the big screen.

Children of Blood and Bone Trailer: What Orïsha Looks Like In the Trailer?

Yes, the first full trailer is here. Paramount Pictures dropped it on July 28, 2026, and it gives fans their best look yet at the world of Orïsha. Set to Beyoncé’s song Energy, the trailer is bright, bold, and full of magic.

We see Zélie with her signature white hair, sweeping landscapes, glowing magical powers, and different maji clans showing off their abilities. We get our first glimpse of most of the movie’s stacked cast. The costumes are colorful, complete with beautiful face paints and gleaming armor. These costumes give the movie a rich look, comparable to that of Black Panther and The Woman King.

There are also glimpses of huge battles and King Saran’s harsh rule, setting up the fight to come. Simply put, Orïsha looks stunning on screen so far.
