CD Projekt Red Officially Confirms The Witcher 4 is Targeting a 2028 Release

The Witcher 4 finally has a release year, and CD Projekt Red has asked fans to be patient a little longer. The studio has confirmed that its next Witcher game is targeting a 2028 release, although there is still no exact date or even a confirmed month for Ciri’s long-awaited adventure.

Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski delivered the news alongside the studio’s Gamescom plans, while also confirming that The Witcher 4 will not be shown at the event. As he put it (via X):

While we’re NOT showing The Witcher 4 at [Gamescom], and we’re NOT ready to share an exact date, I CAN tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.

The 2028 target follows The Witcher 4′s first unveiling at The Game Awards 2024, followed by the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo in June 2025. For now, though, CD Projekt Red has another Witcher surprise lined up for Gamescom.

CD Projekt Red Finally Puts a Year on The Witcher 4

The 2028 target may sound distant, but it is also a reassuring sign that CD Projekt Red is not trying to force The Witcher 4 onto shelves before it is ready. After the hard-learned lessons of Cyberpunk 2077, another lengthy development cycle is hardly the worst thing fans could have asked for.

Nowakowski also revealed that more than 500 developers are currently working on the game, which gives some context to its scale. The studio is promising a huge open world, action-heavy gameplay, and a story with real weight, while calling it its biggest and most ambitious game yet:

We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you. The Witcher 4 features a huge and immersive open world intense and action-packed gameplay and a deep impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time. Simply put, this our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.

The Witcher 4 was first revealed at The Game Awards in December 2024, and CD Projekt Red followed that with its impressive Unreal Engine 5 technology demo in June 2025. The studio has since confirmed that Ciri will lead a new Witcher saga, but has deliberately kept the rest of the game under wraps.

There is obviously no month to circle on the calendar yet, and 2028 remains a tentative target rather than a locked-in release date. Still, having CD Projekt Red publicly attach a year to the project is a meaningful step forward, particularly after the studio spent much of the game’s development refusing to offer even that much.

If waiting until 2028 for The Witcher 4 sounds painful, CD Projekt Red has at least given Geralt one more proper adventure to fill the gap. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past is coming in 2027, bringing the White Wolf back for a new full-fledged expansion developed with Fool’s Theory.

CD Projekt Red will show the expansion during Gamescom, with the first glimpse coming during Opening Night Live on August 25. In other words, fans watching from home should get to see the new content alongside those attending in Cologne, with none other than Geoff Keighley hosting the showcase.

The studio is also planning daily REDstreams during Gamescom, with Nowakowski teasing that there could be “a surprise or two” along the way:

We have a lot of the expansion to show off, including a taste of its dark story, and the new content it will bring. So join us at Gamescom if you can, where we have a huge booth in Hall 8 and a team ready to show off the first full look at Songs of the Past. And make sure to tune in to special REDstreams when they go live each and every day. We might even have a surprise or two to share.

So, for anyone staring down a 2028 wait, Songs of the Past gives Geralt one more chapter to sink their teeth into before Ciri takes the reins. Between the expansion and whatever CD Projekt Red has planned for Gamescom, there is still plenty of Witcher action ahead.
