Donald Trump Officially Hypes up Lanterns Episode 4 With the Greatest Green Lantern Quote

The official White House X account created an unusual bit of timing for HBO’s Lanterns when it shared a video depicting President Donald Trump as Green Lantern, accompanied by the Green Lantern Corps’ famous oath. Multiple outlets described the video as AI-generated. The clip shows Trump wielding a glowing green ring alongside stylized imagery involving a border barrier, American manufacturing, and U.S. military ships and aircraft. 

The White House post does not mention Lanterns, HBO, DC Studios, or Warner Bros. Discovery, and there is no announced connection between the video and the series. The noteworthy part is simply the timing: the post appeared late Sunday evening as Episode 4 was preparing to air at 9 p.m. ET on September 6. 

The White House Used Green Lantern’s Most Iconic Oath

The caption accompanying the White House video uses the familiar Green Lantern oath, beginning:

The remainder warns those aligned with evil to beware Green Lantern’s light. DC identifies this as the classic oath associated with Green Lantern mythology. Its history stretches back decades before Hal Jordan or John Stewart appeared on television. DC traces the familiar wording to Green Lantern #9 in 1943, where Alan Scott recited the version that eventually became inseparable from the wider Green Lantern mythology. DC has even called the oath “one of the greatest things to come out of comics.” 

That history explains why the White House video is immediately recognizable even without mentioning an HBO series. The oath, glowing ring, and green constructs are among the most identifiable elements attached to Green Lantern. The video uses those elements in a political-media context rather than as part of DC storytelling. As of September 7, there has been no publicly announced collaboration with DC Studios or HBO tied to the post. Contemporary coverage also found no public response from DC Studios or Warner Bros. Discovery connecting it to Lanterns. 

Lanterns Episode 4 Makes the Timing Even More Noticeable

Lanterns Episode 4, The Weenie, happens to be an especially Green Lantern-heavy chapter. Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, visits his imprisoned former mentor Thaal Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen. Their conversation gives viewers a much clearer look at the history between Hal and the man who would become one of Green Lantern’s defining adversaries. Sinestro also feeds Hal’s growing doubts about his trainee, John Stewart (via Vulture). Thomsen has made no secret of wanting to explore more of the character. Speaking to The Wrap about Sinestro, he said:

He added that there was considerably more of that world he would like to explore. Episode 4 also delivers the season’s biggest Manhunter reveal so far. Zoe, played by Poorna Jagannathan, is revealed to be the Manhunter at the center of Hal and John’s investigation. Jagannathan told Entertainment Weekly that the twist surprised her as much as it did many viewers because she had not been told the truth about Zoe beforehand. As she put it:

Jagannathan explained that learning Zoe’s real identity caused her to reconsider scenes she had already filmed and gave the character’s earlier behavior a different meaning. The revelation also creates another fracture between Hal and John. Hal becomes convinced that John withheld important information about Zoe, leaving their already difficult mentor-trainee relationship in an even worse place by the episode’s end. 

That tension has been central to the series from the beginning. Chandler previously told the Los Angeles Times that Hal and John start out disliking one another but gradually develop a real bond. Discussing Hal’s eventual feelings toward John, Chandler joked:
