5 Gladius

Gladius once belonged to the vampire lord Brencis, and it’s tucked inside the lair of the Beast of Balaur. After defeating the miniboss guarding the area, use Shadowstep or Planeshift to reach a ledge holding the chest where the sword is stored.

Its bonuses lean hard into vampiric playstyles, giving extra vampiric health and higher critical hit chance along with improved blood-drinking restoration. It’s the pick worth prioritizing for anyone planning to fight as a vampire once Coen’s night-time abilities open up.

4 Durandal

Most players won’t get their hands on a proper legendary blade this early, but Durandal breaks that pattern, as it’s up for grabs just a few hours after the prologue ends. The chain starts in Svartrau city. Talk to the innkeeper at the tavern to hear about Skender’s men, who fell into a chasm along with a haul of treasure. That trail leads to the Cursed Chasm, found at a broken bridge west of Briar Slough, where a boss called Echo guards the loot.

This weapon scales with Coen’s level, hits much harder against supernatural enemies, and costs less stamina to swing and dodge with. It also comes with a three-hit Weapon Art, making it strong enough to carry a build past the early game.

The Deep Down side quest has Coen following a trail into the peat bogs in search of a farmer, a search that ends up underground in a crypt network. Waiting at the bottom is a corpse-guardian, who can prove to be a straightforward fight if you stay patient on block and punish the openings.

He drops the Undead Warrior’s Sword, a dependable mid-prologue upgrade, and the whole quest is short enough to finish without eating much into the time limit.

2 Polished Long Cleaver

To unlock this one, you’ll need the Rebel’s Falchion in hand first. Once you have it, head into the nearby house to grab a treasure map that leads up the hill behind it. The trail ends in a cave guarded by a Ravenous Bear, and defeating it unlocks a loot stash containing the Polished Long Cleaver.

Rated as a Master Longsword usable from Level 5, it carries a modest boost to supernatural damage and ability-charge restoration, and by most accounts it’s the hardest-hitting sword available anywhere in the prologue.

1 Rebel’s Falchion

The Rebel’s Falchion is about as close to a starter weapon as the prologue gets. It drops from clearing the Rebel Camp, a bandit hideout in the northeast corner of the prologue map. This also isn’t a freebie, as the camp boss is present with a pair of bandits and their dog, so you’ll be juggling multiple threats at once rather than picking enemies off one by one. However, even after all the struggles, it’s one of the earliest quest rewards available, making it a natural first upgrade over Coen’s starting gear.
