Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has already outperformed last year’s Black Ops 7 on Steam. This is a great sign because the game is currently in Early Access and only the single-player campaign is available. This means that fans are praising it and playing it on the merit of the campaign alone.

— CharlieIntel (@charlieINTEL) October 17, 2026The newest entry in Activision’s franchise has already gotten more than 108,000 concurrent players on Steam, and has yet to launch its full multiplayer experience. The game fully launches on October 23, and we can expect there to be an even larger player base once multiplayer comes out.

According to the Steam player-count data on SteamDB, Modern Warfare 4 has already gotten a peak of more than 108,500 concurrent players on Steam. This is already more than the peak player count for Black Ops 7, which peaked at around 100,000 players in the last year.
And that’s not even considering the additional context. Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign early access is available to eligible players ahead of its full launch. The rest of the Call of Duty experience, including multiplayer, is yet to be released. It’s worth noting that the concurrent player count is from the Call of Duty application on Steam.
Still, we can see that there is interest in the newest CoD experience. The new campaign has also received positive early reviews on Steam, with fans praising the storytelling and character development. By comparison, Black Ops 7 had a decently negative reception, especially for its single-player campaign.
This early momentum for MW4 could translate into an even higher concurrent player peak when the full game becomes available. However, it’s too early to tell whether this success will carry over into the multiplayer or turn into stronger long-term success.
Modern Warfare 4 Could Bring Back Call of Duty
This could be the start of a comeback for the franchise. | Image Credit: ActivisionAfter the reception of Black Ops 7, Activision has had to acknowledge that the franchise needed to respond to player feedback. In an interview with The Game Business, chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl discussed the criticism of the recent games and the importance of delivering titles that better reflect what the community wants.
Modern Warfare 4 seems to address some of those concerns. Activision has taken a more grounded, cinematic approach, with the campaign following tensions on the Korean Peninsula. We play as Private Park Hyun-jun, and the publisher has described the campaign as the largest in Modern Warfare history.
The game’s early reception is a great example of the importance of single-player content in the franchise. CoD is now known for its multiplayer, so giving us a good campaign is a good way to get players who might otherwise skip. This could also be a great sign for the Call of Duty 2027 project, which has also been rumored to be a new sub-franchise.
