The music world has lost one of its most recognizable voices. Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer known for her songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, has sadly passed away at the age of 75.
On Thursday, the news broke out as several outlets reported, and it was later confirmed by her management and family. Her official website confirmed the news.

According to a statement shared by her family and management, the singer “unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”
Back in May, she was placed in a medically induced coma after an emergency surgery. While she was out of the coma last month, her health remained precarious, and she was under intensive care in Portugal.
At this time, her family has not disclosed a specific medical cause of death beyond confirming that it was related to the illness for which she had been hospitalized. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no additional medical details have been released.
Her health struggles first became public in June 2026, and her shows scheduled later this year were canceled. At the time, doctors were optimistic about her recovery, making news of her death particularly unexpected for many fans.
Following the news, tributes have poured in from fellow musicians, fans, and public figures celebrating Tyler’s decades-long contribution to popular music. A spokesperson for Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister, revealed that he was “saddened” by the death of “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, in 1951, Bonnie Tyler built one of the most distinctive careers in popular music. Long before Total Eclipse of the Heart became an anthem of the 1980s, she had already established herself with hits such as Lost in France and It’s a Heartache, the latter becoming an international breakthrough in 1978 (via The Guardian).
Surprisingly, one of the defining moments of her career came through adversity when, in 1977, she underwent surgery to remove vocal cord nodules. During her recovery, doctors instructed her not to speak, but she accidentally strained her voice, leaving her with the husky, gravelly tone that would become her signature (via Reuters).
Her biggest success arrived in 1983 with Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written and produced by Jim Steinman. The song topped charts around the world, including the Billboard Hot 100, and remains one of the defining power ballads of the decade.
When she first heard the song, she had remarked (via Reuters): I knew this was the song I have been waiting for all my life.
A year later, she followed it with Holding Out for a Hero, another Steinman collaboration that found new generations of listeners through films, television, commercials, and streaming platforms. It was also featured in the film Shrek 2. With 18 studio albums, the last one being 2021’s The Best Is Yet to Come, she remained active and continued touring.
She married property developer Robert Sullivan, her first serious boyfriend, back in 1973. They did not have any children.
Bonnie Tyler leaves behind a catalog that spans nearly five decades, but her legacy extends beyond record sales or awards. Her songs continue to remain as powerful today as they were released.
