In the Bleach anime and manga-verse, the Gotei 13 is one of the most iconic groups within the Shinigami (Soul Reaper) faction. While the Soul Reapers themselves have unique personalities, the captains are on a whole different level of intelligence and impact in the series – especially when it comes to having innate battle IQ.

For those still guessing which Gotei 13 captain has the highest battle IQ among the current roster, this ranked list is here to help. Here are all the Gotei 13 captains from the Bleach series, ranked by their battle IQ level.

12 Kenpachi Zaraki – The Instinctive Combat Machine

Kenpachi Zaraki is an absolute battle machine with overwhelming strength and almost inhuman power. But when it comes to strategy, there is almost none in his case – he is one of the hottest-headed and most impulsive characters in the entire Bleach series, ready to burst out with just a single provocation.

While he does not care for strategy, he needs to be given credit where it is due. He has an impressive ability to adapt mid-battle, which elevated his position from the rest and made him a captain of the 11th squad of the Gotei 13.

11 Sajin Komamura – The Noble and Honourable Power House

The human form was recently revealed during the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, and Sajin Komamura is mostly known for his werewolf-like appearance. When it comes to battle, Saijin is the most honourable fighter out of all the captains, heavily implying to follow rules and respect opponents.

However, his nobility is what got him into a jam most of the time. Nevertheless, he is in no means weak, nor is his Bankai. The only reason he is down is that he is too noble and honourable to follow the rules and etiquette; strategic advances are out of the window.

10 Kensei Muguruma – A Strong Fighter With Disregard for Strategy

Discussing hot-headed fighters and Gotei 13 captains from Bleach, the former Visored and current captain of the 9th squad, Kensei Muguruma, is probably high up in that category. Kensei has a simple fighting style: brutish strength to overwhelm opponents rather than strategic planning.

During the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, this brute and headstrong trait is the only thing that gets Kensei killed and later resurrected as a zombie by Giselle, only to face his own comrades. When it comes down to it, strategy and Kensei are like the north and south poles.

9 Soi Fon – A Deadly and Stealthy Assassin With Emotional Flaws

The captain of the 2nd squad and the commander-in-chief of the Stealth Force, Soi Fon, is one of the most stealthy and lethal fighters in the series. Armed with her unique Zanpakuto, Suzumebachi, she relies on quick, precise strikes rather than mass damage till she pulls out her Bankai, which is literally a missile launcher.

Coming to battle IQ, Soi Fon is one of the most tactical and strategic fighters in the series. But why is she so low on this list? Apart from every tactical move, Soi Fon has a glaring drawback – she is frequently overwhelmed with emotions. Being rattled and easily provoked isn’t really something a battle genius possesses.

8 Jushiro Ukitake – A Tactical Thinker Limited by His Illness

From what we know from the manga and other official references, Jushiro Ukitake, the captain of the 13th division, isn’t really bad at tactics and strategy. He even plays one of the most vital roles in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc towards the Soul King narrative. The only thing that diminishes his position on this list is Tite Kubo’s plot device.

Because of the whole Mimihagi and Right Hand of the Soul King narrative, Ukitake was ill and off-screen for most of the Bleach and Bleach: TYBW series. Because of that, we didn’t really get to see much of his tactical and strategic planning, leading to his lower rank.

7 Rojuro Otoribashi (Rose) – A Musician With Deadly Tunes in Battle

Rojuro Otoribashi (Rose), the captain of the 3rd division, shines in the art of deception and creativity in battle. Using the powers of his Zanpakuto, Kinshara, Rojuro uses music as a means of illusion and sensory manipulation to catch his opponents off guard.

His reason for being this low? Overexplanation. The one thing that no one wants to give out during battle is the exact way their ability works, and Rose does exactly that, let alone against an opponent like Mask. Additionally, coming to the strategy, his ideas are smart but lack the kill-securing oomph needed.

6 Byakuya Kuchiki – Calm and Analytical but No Top-Tier Deduction

When it comes to battle smarts, the 6th Division captain Byakuya Kuchiki always has a confident aura while facing his opponents. He is analytical, methodical, and efficiency-focused when planning the course of a battle. However, he remains the classic case of the past defining a character arc.

In the very beginning of the series, Byakuya was rather rigid in his fighting style with his powerful Bankai and beliefs – basically, it was “my way or the highway”. Additionally, he lacks drastically in the top-tier layers of battle IQ shown in the series with characters like Shunsui and Shinji.

5 Toshiro Hitsugaya – A Prodigy-Level Strategist With Good Battle IQ

Toshiro Hitsugaya is one of the top-tier battle IQ captains from the Gotei 13. What makes him so elite is his ability to deduce strategies mid-battle and come up with tactics to adapt to his opponents’ powers and weaknesses. However, at the beginning of the series, he had a major flaw as a captain figure.

Toshiro can get overly emotional and lose reason on several occasions, as seen during the whole Momo Hinamori and Aizen betrayal narrative. At that point, tactics and strategy are basically out of the window. Additionally, his deductions may be elite, but not masterful.

4 Shinji Hirako – A Master Manipulator With Overconfidence Issues

Shinji Hirako, the captain of the 5th Division, is a master manipulator, especially armed with his unique Zanpakuto, Sakanade. To start, Shinji doesn’t rely on brute strength like Zaraki or Sajin, but relies on deception, perception manipulation, and psychological warfare.

However, the glaring flaw kicks in when he gets confident, maybe too confident. This is one of the major reasons he was caught off guard by Bambietta Basterbine during their confrontation in TYBW. Furthermore, he doesn’t seem to capitalise on his advantage – Gains a massive edge with his ability, but fails to secure the win cleanly.

3 Retsu Unohana – Centuries of Experience With Psychological Dominance

As one of the oldest and most experienced surviving captains of the Gotei 13, Retsu Unohana holds immense combat knowledge and innate surgical killing tactics. With countless battles and wins under her belt, it can only be because of her perfectly refined decisions and reading situations to act accordingly.

One of the biggest flaws we could find is the massive lack of screentime she got throughout the series, till the point of her battle with Kenpachi Zaraki. On another note, Unohana relies on mastery over variety in battle, which resonates with an adaptation issue.

2 Shunsui Kyoraku – Master Psychological Warfare With Innate Battle IQ

The former captain of the 8th Division and the current commander of the 1st Division, Shunsui Kyoraku, is one of the most prominent figures of the Bleach series during the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. Being the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, Shunsui is a master manipulator, especially with his Bankai that converts simple childhood games into deadly psychological warfare.

In active battle, Shunsui completely reads his opponents’ personalities, fears, and habits to bait them into making mistakes in his rule-based death games. On top of that, unlike Rose, Shunsui knows best not to reveal his hand and keep everything in confidence for the strategic and tactical advantage.

It is also worth noting that after the death of Genryusai Yamamoto, Shunsui took hold of the helm, and the 8th Division was without a captain till the end of the TYBW Arc. Based on the manga (via FandomWiki), Lisa Yadomaru became the 8th captain, post-TYBW Arc.

1 Mayuri Kurotsuchi – Scientific Mastermind With Strategies at Ready

When it comes to planning strategies and tactics, no single captain comes close to Mayuri Kurotsuchi. The captain of the 12th Division is a ruthless scientist who lacks compassion and emotions, making him even more of a battling mastermind.

Where we see emotional consideration taking down others’ battle intelligence quotient, Mayuri is a league above the others. No matter the extent of problems that arise in battle, he always has backup plans and solutions. Additionally, thanks to all the modifications to his face and body, he is resistant to most attacks that are drastic for a normal human being.
