Senior, 75, injured in violent DTES robbery

Police are looking for suspects after the violent robbery of a 75-year-old man in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The man was near East Hastings Street and Jackson Avenue at around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday when he was targeted by a group.

“This was a very serious incident where a senior who lives in the area was going for a walk in the neighbourhood and was attacked and robbed,” Vancouver police spokeswoman Const. Megan Lui said Thursday.

One of the robbers pushed the senior to the ground and punched him in the face several times before stealing his personal belongings, said the VPD. When the senior tried to get his things back, he was slammed into a wall twice.

Police released a video showing the victim crossing the street, chasing a man with a large black bag slung over a shoulder. Another man could be seen grabbing the senior and slamming him against the wall.

The senior fell to the ground unmoving. He suffered a head injury, bruises and scrapes, and was taken to hospital. He has since been released.

Police released the video Thursday in the hopes of identifying the suspects.

“We are asking anyone who witnessed the robbery or has information that could assist investigators to come forward,” said Lui. “We want to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.”

Woman in hospital after unprovoked attack in downtown Vancouver

A woman has been taken to hospital after an attack in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday.

The woman was walking to work near Robson and Homer streets just before 9:15 a.m. when she was approached and assaulted by a stranger, said the Vancouver police.

She was choked, bitten on the face and hand, and pulled to the ground.

“The suspect and victim did not know each other, and the assault was unprovoked,” said Const. Megan Lui in a news release.

The attacker left the area but a person was arrested by police a block away. The motive for the attack isn’t known.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Jayleen McKay, 34, has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault by choking. She remains in custody.

McKay also faces a separate charge of assault stemming from an incident last September in Burnaby.
