Armie Hammer’s comeback action thriller Citizen Vigilante has been blocked from release in Germany before its North American debut on June 19. Germany’s film ratings board, the FSK, refused to grant the film any age classification, no 18+ rating, and no “No Youth Clearance,” effectively banning it from distribution. (Via FortressOfSolitude)
Director Uwe Boll claims the ban targets the movie’s depiction of crime linked to migration, framing it as censorship of a film that addresses “the reality” of security issues in Europe. The film, Hammer’s first major Hollywood comeback role since s*xual a*sault allegations collapsed his career in the early 2020s, has already drawn controversy globally.
Why Citizen Vigilante Got Banned In Germany Before Its Release?
The Citizen Vigilante Germany ban has ignited debates about censorship, artistic freedom, and vigilantism. Boll argues the FSK is using youth protection as a pretext to suppress content about mass migration. First reviewer Jeffrey Wells describes Citizen Vigilante as a “furious anti-immigration” parable, essentially a Death Wish riff where Hammer’s vigilante character Sanders becomes a social media folk hero hunting criminals.
The trailer itself surprises by looking more polished than Boll’s reputation suggests, and Hammer seems fully invested in the role after years away from screen work. The film lands on June 19 through Quiver Distribution across streaming platforms, but the German ban could either sabotage its momentum or unexpectedly fuel curiosity.
Hammer’s journey back to Hollywood reads like a redemption arc: once a Golden Globe-nominated leading man, he ended up working as a Cayman Islands hotel concierge by 2022 after allegations destroyed his career, describing that period as “brutal” and admitting he was “canceled” and “broke”. By 2025, he had started turning down roles again before landing this vigilante thriller, originally titled The Dark Knight, until Warner Bros. sent a cease-and-desist.
Citizen Vigilante follows Sanders, a vigilante who takes justice into his own hands, drawing Interpol chief Henry’s attention (played by Costas Mandylor from Saw).
