Police say traffic collisions involving youth and children are on the rise across Metro Vancouver, and more than doubled in one year. Just two weeks ago a 12-year-old was injured in a similar crash in North Vancouver.

Maple Ridge RCMP say that at about 5 p.m. officers were called out to a motor-vehicle collision involving a child in the area of 232nd Street and 124th Avenue. When they arrived, officers found a 13-year-old suffering from serious injuries.

Officers provided initial first aid to the youth before alerting emergency health services. The teen was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the RCMP.

Police say the teen was riding an e-scooter northbound in the area when it struck a grey Audi sedan. Investigators say the car was parked along 232nd Street and the driver was trying to pull into traffic. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and is co-operating with police.

Police say the youth was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Authorities are reminding people that to ride an electric kick scooter you must be at least 16 years old and that parents aren’t allowed to let their children under that age ride the scooters.

According to Trauma Services B.C., there has been a “clear upward trend in e-scooter-related injuries among children and youth,” with the number of youths with severe injuries rising from fewer than five cases in 2021 to 10 cases in 2024.
