SUMMARY

  • God of War creator David Jaffe doesn't like the current Kratos in the series.
  • According to him, developers have made Kratos too soft of a character.
  • However, gamers don't agree with David Jaffe's take, and believe he is wrong.

There’s no argument over the fact that Kratos is one of the most recognizable names in the entirety of video gaming history. The protagonist of the God of War franchise is a demigod who’s capable of saving many and wreaking havoc on anything that stands in his way.

While fans worship Kratos, God of War‘s creator doesn’t like the current state of the character and feels like he has lost his way due to development choices. However, gamers can’t understand this wild take in the slightest.

God of War‘s creator, David Jaffe, opened up the current state of the franchise in one of his YouTube videos. While he suggests that he enjoyed the first reboot game in the franchise, he doesn’t actually want Kratos to grow as a character as the developers and fanbase grow older.

According to Jaffe, this newer version of Kratos that’s mature and softer doesn’t resonate well with him. He believes that developers at Santa Monica Studios are shaping the character by injecting their personal lives into the game.

When confronted with the view that Kratos would become too bland if he remained an angry man for five straight games, Jaffe cites the examples of Spider-Man and James Bond to show how to maintain the personability of a character.

However, Jaffe’s take on the current state of Kratos hasn’t proven to be a popular one. Gamers can’t understand how the creator considers Kratos to be “soft” when considering all the acts he has done in the franchise so far.

Due to his comments, gamers have been mocking Jaffe and claiming that he’s just annoyed over the fact that he isn’t working on the game anymore, and Sony made the right decision by taking him off the franchise. Even God of War 2018’s director Cory Barlog can’t understand Jaffe’s comments.

Leaving behind angry Kratos was necessary for the evolution of such a beloved franchise. However, Santa Monica hasn’t forgotten that side of Kratos’ character, as it’s visible through various references and boss fights we see in the Valhalla DLC.

God of War Creator believes Atreus is “Terrible”

If you’ve forgotten, God of War 2018 introduced us to Arteus, who is Kratos’ son. He was also featured in the God of War Ragnarok. While we could only utilize him as a companion in the first game, the sequel put the spotlight on Atreus and gave him a number of incredible moments.

However, not everyone was a fan of Atreus receiving the attention, and one of them was the God of War creator himself. While chatting with John Garvin, Jaffe stated that Atreus is a bad character at both visual and play levels.

According to Jaffe, Ragnarok couldn’t bring a compelling argument to the table for why Arteus should be the next big protagonist of the franchise, which is something Santa Monica was clearly looking to do.

Even though Jaffe liked the idea of Kratos having his very own son, he was frustrated with the game’s execution of the idea.
