Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a reinvention of the original RPG. But instead of just cycling through weapons as you get better ones, every weapon remains useful throughout the game. This is thanks to the weapon upgrade system, which gives each weapon unique abilities and customizable Materia slots. Square Enix also gave each weapon a special ability that can be permanently learned by using it enough, which means we can build each character with different combat styles.

How Weapon Abilities Work in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Every weapon in Final Fantasy 7 Remake includes a unique weapon ability. Characters can use these abilities while the weapon is equipped, and repeated use increases proficiency. Once proficiency reaches 100%, the ability becomes permanently available regardless of which weapon is equipped.
This makes it so that you’ll want to collect and experiment with every weapon instead of sticking to a single one throughout the game. Learning all weapon abilities is also required for the Weapons Expert trophy.
In addition to abilities, weapons can be upgraded using SP (Skill Points). As weapon levels increase, new upgrade cores unlock additional stats, passive bonuses, and Materia slots. By the later stages of the game, every weapon can become viable depending on the build you want to create.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a ton of weapons across the main game and INTERmission DLC, and each one offers a unique ability and upgrade path. Which one is your favorite weapon for every character? Let us know in the comments!
