Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains full spoilers for Cape Fear Episodes 6, including key plot reveals, character developments, and episode endings. Proceed with caution!

Cape Fear Episode 6 ends with Zack apparently walking out of the Bowdens’ home and into, presumably, Max Cady’s (Javier Bardem) home across the street. He is probably under the impression, false or otherwise, that he is the son of Max and Anna, not Tom (Patrick Wilson) and Anna (Amy Adams). We don’t know for certain whether that’s true, but the seeds of doubt have been planted.

Earlier, Tom and Anna visited Max to hash it all out, and Max said something that led Tom and us, the audience, to believe that there was something romantic between Max and Anna back before he went to prison. And Zack (Joe Anders) at least believes he is the product of that relationship. Let’s dive into the shocking ending and how it sets up the future.

Max Cady Reveals What He Wants From the Bowdens

The episode, titled Possum, removed every ambiguity as to whether Max is behind Bowdens’ troubles, something which I have wondered since the first couple of episodes. He indeed is, and he also explained his philosophy in some detail. After mounting distress and the fact that they cannot prove that Max Cady is behind everything that’s happening to them, the Bowdens decide to talk to him and what he really wants. They find a woman at his house and also their cat called Peanut Butter, a name that amused Cady to no end. He says that is a horrible name for such a majestic creature.

Their visit only confirms their suspicions about Cady, and they learn that nothing they could do would stop him. Well, he does have conditions, but there is no way they can fulfill them. He wants them to reunite him with his family. When they say they cannot do so, he says, then maybe they can help him build a new family, as he and his wife froze her eggs before she was murdered. He then laughs, saying he is joking.

He becomes more serious. He wants them to apologize. When Anna points out that they have done so already, he says he wants public apologies from both of them. Also, he wants them to quit practising law so, he explains, they won’t ruin anybody else’s life. This is too high a price. Tom threatens Max, who is unafraid, saying he will have to kill him. Yes, Tom agrees. Max challenges Tom to kill him there and then.

During their conversation, Max talks about how he trusted Anna when she represented him. “You know what I mean,” he tells her mysteriously. They leave, but Tom later asks Anna what that was about. She, in response, brings up Lexi (Margarita Levieva, also known for Daredevil Born Again), as apparently she has heard what happened in Episode 5 — Lexi accused Tom of sexual harassment, and the culprit was the voicemail that she claims Tom sent to her. Tom, on her part, claims it was AI wizardry performed by Max.

When Bowdens insist to know what he really wants, Max tells a story about a girl called Lila. She thought she was better than anyone else. She had contempt for one particular boy and repeatedly tormented him. The boy was patient. He never complained. Slowly, the girl’s contempt transformed into desire. She fell in love with the boy. But the boy? He used her love to punish her. He played with her love like a cat plays with a mouse.

The boy, adds Cady, wanted it to be paid in pain. When someone really wrongs you, you find your way and take your time to make them suffer the way you suffered. And that, the Bowdens learn, is what Cady wants from them. Javier Bardem has essayed compelling antagonists throughout his career. While Anton Chigurh was unreadable and complex in his own way, Max Cady is even more frightening because of his single-minded focus on ruining the Bowdens.

The Curious Case of Zack Bowden

Zack has been what you call a “troubled teenager” throughout the show. We discovered back in Cape Fear’s Episode 4 that Max appears to share some sort of twisted relationship with Zack, but we do not know the exact nature of it. In the episode, Tom found Max and Zack exchanging an object on CCTV footage. Later, Max claimed it was Zack handing him the sketch of his (Max’s) child as he imagined him in his dreams. It was still disturbing, though.

The Bowdens suspected Max was behind Zack’s disappearance earlier, but it was likely Nevaeh, though likely on Max’s orders. Ever since he came back, he has behaved weirdly with his family. Even Natalie (Lily Collias), who is not on friendly terms with Tom and Anna herself, finds him increasingly odd.

Now, although he has not said anything to that effect, it seems Zack believes Max is his father. At the end of this Cape Fear episode, after the brouhaha resulting from the revelation that Nevaeh has been hiding in Bowdens’ house the whole time, Zack saw his chance and left, his bare feet leaving footprints due to the spilled paint. I am not sure whether Max deliberately manipulated Zack into believing he is his biological father or whether Zack arrived at that conclusion on his own remains unclear (we suspect the former). But the seeds have been planted throughout the season.

The ending of this Cape Fear episode does not tell us for sure whether Max is really Zack’s father. In actuality, the show appears more concerned with the harm done to the family due to the very fact that such questions can arise. Max has been breaking down the family’s trust for weeks now, and perhaps his greatest cruelty has been convincing Zack that he doesn’t belong there.

How Max Cady continues to tear the Bowdens apart

In the episode, Max continues to torment the Bowdens. This is why Max is such a terrifying villain and a big improvement from the earlier adaptations of the novel, The Executioners, including the 1991 movie of the same name. He apparently drugs their tea with acid (LSD) and starts a fire (the latter is something Tom thinks Zack did). He also strikes up a conversation with Natalie and leaves her believing that her parents are not at fault for the whole thing. At the conclusion of Episode 6, Max has managed to do something which would have been impossible for him to accomplish through sheer force: he has managed to turn all the members of the Bowden family against each other. Both Tom and Anna are at loggerheads with each other over the truthfulness of the other after Max’s mysterious comment regarding his trust in Anna when she defended him (not to mention Tom’s own sexual harassment allegations). Tom is speculating if there really was an affair while Anna is responding by citing Lexi’s claims against him.

The kids, too, are affected in equal measure in Cape Fear. Natalie, who is already grappling with her alcohol problem and plagued with visions as a result of consuming LSD without knowing, finds herself getting more detached from her parents. Zack, on the other hand, has grown even more distant. The disturbing way Zack acts through the episode reaches its peak when he seems to abandon the Bowden family completely after they find Nevaeh (Malia Pyles) hiding under the house (something Zack already knows, and I thought Tom and Anna also knew). In essence, he does not recognize them as his real family anymore (that is not hinted; he says that literally).

Bardem is doing the work of his lifetime here, even if the show around him is not nearly as good as he is. He is magnetic and sympathetic, even when he is evil. Cady is hypnotic because his revenge goes beyond just using physical intimidation. In fact, to Bowdens, he only employs psychological manipulation. He uses every flaw and every weakness that the Bowdens have, making them do his job for him. By the time they get to Episode 6, the family is even more divided than before, with Max in the best possible position going forward. I cannot wait to find out what Max does to the Bowdens next, and I repeat, the weekly release schedule of the show is killing me with the suspense.

Cape Fear Episode 6, titled Possum, is now streaming on Apple TV.
