2 more youths charged after Toronto Police officer allegedly hit by stolen car

An additional 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old youth now face charges following an alleged auto theft late Sunday night, during which a Toronto Police officer was allegedly struck by the stolen car.

Toronto Police said the 12-year-old from Toronto has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and dangerous operation of a conveyance.

Cops said a 14-year-old youth from Toronto has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

On Sunday at 11:38 p.m., police responded to a call for an auto theft in the Donlands Ave.-O’Connor Drive area, where it’s alleged that police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle and the driver of the vehicle struck an officer.

An officer discharged their firearm and the vehicle fled the scene.

The officer was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the driver of the vehicle was arrested a short distance away and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

The officer has since been released from hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 12-year-old Toronto boy. He has been charged with attempt murder, theft of motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation, fail to stop for police, assault peace officer and leave accident scene.

The Province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation.

Sources identified the officer involved to the Sun’s Joe Warmington

Sources told the Toronto Sun‘s Joe Warmington that the officer is Const. Arlind Cakiqi, who was reportedly “shaken up” after hearing the age of the driver.

Cakiqi was treated for an injured arm, back and other issues but Warmington reported via sources he was expected to be assessed further.

The incident came days after Toronto Police Const. Marc Pinizzotto was slain while attempting to serve a search warrant in an apartment in North York.

Pinizzotto was a member of an Emergency Task Force unit that was shot at by occupants of the apartment, who were suspected of being involved in a string of high-profile shootings in the city, including the March 10 shooting of the U.S. Consulate on University Ave.

As well, a funeral for OPP Const. Tarun Bali is being held Thursday at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre after the Brampton native was killed last week while on duty in northern Ontario.
