Unlike the recent Progressive movies, Integral Domain is not based on an existing light novel. Instead, it features an original story concept created by Sword Art Online creator Reki Kawahara. The story will take place after the Alicization arc, making it the first completely new anime story in the main timeline since Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale, released in 2017.

Kirito and Asuna will return as the main characters. The announcement also confirmed that Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will return as the voices of Kirito and Asuna, allowing fans to once again follow the franchise’s most iconic duo in a brand-new adventure.
