Why Seeing The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm Won’t Be Easy for Most U.S. Fans

Christopher Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX film cameras, something no narrative feature has ever done. That one fact is why the format you choose actually matters this time. Simply explained, normal films are shot on 35 mm film, while an IMAX 70mm movie is twice as wide.

It runs sideways through the projector instead of top to bottom, so every frame is enormous. Each one carries 15 perforations and holds far more detail than anything else in a cinema. It is shown in a nearly square 1.43:1 shape that fills the screen from floor to ceiling.

In other formats, the top and bottom are usually shaved off. In IMAX 70mm, you see the entire image exactly as Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema captured it. However, fans in the U.S. and across the world run into a major problem with the movie’s IMAX 70mm experience.

Only 25 theaters in the whole United States can project it. And across the border, only nine theaters in Canada can give you the complete IMAX 70mm experience. The demand was so obvious that IMAX put tickets on sale in July 2025, a full year before release, and they evaporated.

According to the IMAX official site, the 25 screens sit across roughly 14 states. California has the most, including AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco and Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood. What Are the Other Best Options to Watch The Odyssey?

If you can’t access the IMAX 70mm screens, you still have solid fallbacks. Standard IMAX is the closest thing. There are around 400 IMAX screens in the US, and they will play the film at 1.90:1, which is shorter than the 70mm version but still taller than an ordinary screen.

Some IMAX with Laser sites can even manage the full 1.43:1 image without a film print. Dolby Cinema is the most widely available premium choice. In the Dolby Vision laser projection with a million-to-one contrast ratio, blacks look genuinely black and bright moments hit hard.
