Hints

The answer for today is pretty well hinted at by one of the clues, but you also have to do some thinking to find the exact word.

  • Indicator: Watch for the words “divided,” “over,” and “the shape of.” One tells you to take only part of a word rather than all of it, another indicates that one set of letters should contain another, and the last asks you to think about what something looks like rather than what it means.
  • Fodder: The key pieces are “Arthur” and “Camelot’s table.” One of these will be reduced to a representative letter, while the other provides the remaining letters. Follow the indicators carefully to combine them into the solution.
  • Definition: The definition is “some time?” The answer is a four-letter word that refers to a period or amount of time.

The answer to today’s Minute Cryptic is… Gnome!

Here’s how the clue comes together:

  • The definition is “some time?”, and hour is a four-letter word representing a unit of time.
  • The wordplay uses three different indicators. “Divided” signals that you should take only part of one piece of fodder rather than using it in full. “Over” acts as a containment indicator, telling you that one set of letters should go around another. Finally, “the shape of” is a homoglyph indicator, asking you to use a letter that resembles the shape of Camelot’s table, a reference to the legendary Round Table, which points to the letter O.
  • Combining the selected letters from “Arthur” with O as directed by the indicators produces HOUR, which satisfies the definition “some time?”

How to Play Minute Cryptic

Minute Cryptic clue for yesterday. Some tips and tricks to get you started! | Image Credit: Minute Cryptic

Minute Cryptic is a complicated puzzle game that you’ll spend a lot of time on to master the process. If you want to get it right without using hints, here are some tips on how to play it and decode the clues:

  • Find the Definition: The sentence or riddle always contains the definition, or the literal meaning, at the beginning or end. If you can find the definition, you’re already halfway to the solution. Identify the definition and think of synonyms for the word that are relevant to the riddle and the word length.
  • Identify the Indicators: Indicators are the anagrams, reversals, containers, deletions, and abbreviations. These indicators tell you how to manipulate the fodder to find the answer. However, that’s not possible without identifying the indicators and the fodder, which leads us to the next point.
  • Locate the Fodder: The fodder words are there to throw you off. While they signal the wordplay, they can come off as weird and don’t really belong in the clue. That’s your cue to use the indicators to manipulate the fodder and get closer to the answer.
  • Use both sides of the Clue: You cannot solve the clue by focusing on a single side. Focus on both the beginning and the end, and try to find the definition, its synonyms, and how it fits with the clue. Think outside the box, and relate your answer to the sentence’s wordplay and the definition, because it’s always around that ballpark.
  • Don’t be shy with the Hints: Finally, it’s okay to use hints. You may not get the answer to the clue every day, and that’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Use the hints for the indicators, the fodder, or the letter itself, and keep the streak going!
