Squid Game season two cranked up the drama with new players and test that also means a new set of antagonists including Thanos, player 230, a self-absorbed rapper with purple hair. Fun fact, Thanos is actually played by Choi Seunghyun, better known as T.O.P. from BIGBANG, the K-pop legends who ruled the 2000s and 2010s.
If the name doesn’t ring a bell, his viral moments definitely will, and believe it or not, one of his wildest things on the show actually happened in real life!
This Squid Game moment actually happened in real life!!
In Squid Game Season 2, one of the standout moments came during the finale when Lee Myung-gi, aka Player 333, calls out Choi Seunghyun’s character named after the Avengers villain, Thanos, Player 230, for forgetting his own lyrics mid-rap.
What many might not realize is that this scene was reportedly inspired by a real-life incident involving Seunghyun, better known as T.O.P. from the iconic K-pop group BIGBANG.
Well even if not inspired, some fans made the connection that during a rap battle performance against GD on a Korean variety show, T.O.P famously blanked on his lyrics, creating a moment that went viral. The scene in the series feels like a playful callback to this real-life mishap.
Although Thanos didn’t survive until the end, his character brought plenty of laughs and lighthearted moments to the otherwise grim show. With his mix of over-the-top confidence and occasional cluelessness, he ended up becoming the character people loved to hate, cementing himself as one of the most entertaining additions, this season. If not for his rapping skills, then certainly for his ability to turn a blunder into comedy gold made people his fan!
Looking back at Choi Seunghyun’s career as a K-Pop star, T.O.P.!
T.O.P. started his music journey as an underground rapper before joining YG Entertainment, home to massive K-POP groups like BLACKPINK, and becoming a member of BIGBANG in 2006. Over the next decade, the group delivered hit after hit, with T.O.P. shining not just as a performer but also as a lyricist and composer, even co-writing their 2022 single Still Life, his final bow with the group.
As a solo artist, he made waves with tracks like the swagger-filled Turn It Up (2010), a Top 2 Korean hit, and the eccentric Doom Dada (2013), which charted at number three on Billboard’s World Digital Songs.
In early 2022, T.O.P surprised fans by leaving YG Entertainment and the music scene entirely. A year later, in May 2023, he revealed he had shifted gears, focusing on acting, and judging by his character work, it was a move that suited him well! Fans are eagerly waiting to see more of him in the future!
Squid Game Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
