Zack Snyder’s New Movie That Almost Starred Christian Bale Is Now Officially His Worst Ever

Critics are saying that Zack Snyder‘s passion project is his worst film ever. The filmmaker, known for his distinctive style of superhero movies, took a break from the DC universe to work on his latest feature, The Last Photograph. His independent thriller had its worldwide premiere at this year’s TIFF. However, as it seems, Snyder has failed to please many critics, who are now calling it one of his worst works. TheWrap, which recently published a review of the film, noted,

There is only one noteworthy accomplishment to be found in his latest feature The Last Photograph, and it is this: it is one of the worst films to ever screen at a major film festival.

Snyder, who has given us films like Batman vs. Superman, is seemingly unable to impress even the most die-hard of his fans with The Last Photograph, which almost featured Christian Bale.

A Snyder-Bale collaboration could have been a dream fulfilled for many DC fans. While he has two Batman movies with Ben Affleck, Zack Snyder never got to actually work with Bale in DC. They came very close to a potential partnership more than a decade ago through the initial stage of Snyder’s dream project.

The filmmaker said (via TheWrap) in 2016 that the idea of The Last Photograph came up in the mid-2000s. By 2011, Christian Bale and Sean Penn were attached to the project. Bale was supposed to play the war correspondent, and Penn would have taken on the role of a former special-operations soldier.

However, by 2016, the collaborations failed, and the project never went into production with Bale and Penn. Snyder also moved on with his DC projects, and The Last Photograph remained dormant for over a decade.

What initially started as an Afghanistan war thriller slowly evolved into a more personal story about death, grief, and redemption over the years in The Last Photograph. The drama thriller, directed by Snyder and penned by his longtime collaborator Kurt Johnstad, follows Ethan Black (Stuart Martin), a former DEA operative who travels into the South American mountains to trace his missing nephew and niece, whose diplomat parents were killed.

Ethan meets Joe Wallace (Fra Fee), a washed-up war photographer who stands as a witness to a brutal killing. The two team up and set on a journey to solve the mystery, as Ethan’s own past interrupts. The Last Photograph had its world premiere at TIFF on September 13. However, there is no confirmed theatrical release date currently.
