Emmys 2026: Jean Smart Officially Beats Julia Louis-Dreyfus With 5th Win for Hacks

Jean Smart has finished Hacks the same way Deborah Vance would probably demand: without surrendering the spotlight once. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026, Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time, completing a perfect five wins across all five seasons of HBO Max’s Hacks. That gives Smart an edge over the closest modern comparison, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The latter won the same category six times as Selina Meyer on Veep, from 2012 through 2017, but did not win for the show’s seventh and final season in 2019.

Smart therefore has fewer Hacks wins than Louis-Dreyfus’ six Veep victories, yet Smart owns the cleaner record: she never lost for a season of Hacks. There is another historical wrinkle. Smart is the first woman to win an Emmy for every season of a series that ran at least three seasons. Bill Cosby previously accomplished the feat by winning Lead Actor in a Drama for all three seasons of I Spy. That makes Smart’s five-season sweep exceptionally rare rather than literally unprecedented across every acting category (via Variety).

Jean Smart entered the 2026 ceremony already four-for-four as Deborah. She won for Hacks Seasons 1 and 2 in 2021 and 2022, then returned to the winner’s circle for Seasons 3 and 4 in 2024 and 2025. The fifth victory closes the loop after Hacks ended its 10-episode final season on May 28, 2026. Her final-year competition included Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, Ayo Edebiri for The Bear, Elle Fanning for Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and Lisa Kudrow for The Comeback. Smart still walked away with the trophy, turning what had already been an extraordinary streak into a completed five-season run. 

Smart became emotional while accepting the award, summing up her years with the series with a simple (per People), “What a ride this has been.” She thanked the creators and people who had built Hacks around Deborah’s bruising, funny, frequently combustible relationship with Ava Daniels. Her fifth Hacks win gives Smart eight acting Emmys overall, tying Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the record among performers. Smart’s earlier victories came from two guest appearances on Frasier and a Supporting Actress win for Samantha Who?.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Still Owns the Bigger Veep Total

Jean Smart has not passed Julia Louis-Dreyfus in raw Lead Actress wins for a single character. The latter remains ahead six to five for Selina Meyer, and the Television Academy notes that her sixth Veep victory in 2017 broke the record for most Emmys won for the same role in the same series. What Smart has beaten is Louis-Dreyfus’ completion percentage. Veep ran seven seasons; Louis-Dreyfus won for the first six and was nominated but lost for the finale. Hacks ran five seasons, and Smart won all five. Before the 2026 ceremony, Variety had called Louis-Dreyfus the closest modern parallel, noting that a fifth Smart win would put her in the Emmy history books.

The series handed Smart plenty of firepower for her final win. Season 5 sent Deborah and Ava back to Las Vegas after reports of Deborah’s death, as the comedian became fixated on cementing her legacy, a fitting swan song for a woman determined never to fade from the spotlight. Hacks entered its farewell Emmys with a record 24 nominations, the most ever for a comedy season. Smart’s fifth trophy puts a bow on it: five seasons as Deborah Vance, five Emmy wins for Smart.
