Once Coop explains the situation, Sam reveals that she had actually come to break up with Ashe that night. Ironically, Ashe’s death saves her from having that difficult conversation, but it also drags her into yet another scandal.

The episode’s funniest and most absurd development arrives shortly afterward. As the three men transport what they believe is Ashe’s corpse, Ashe suddenly wakes up. His refusal to grant Coop and Barney access to the money stored in his accounts raises immediate red flags. Officially, Nick claims that moving the funds could attract unwanted attention from investigators. Personally, I do not buy that explanation entirely. It feels as though Nick has realized he now controls assets that everybody else desperately needs. Money has a funny way of changing loyalties.

Elsewhere, Sam decides to leave Westmont for good. Her decision feels earned. One of my favorite scenes involves Coop meeting Ali. Their conversation cuts through the noise of the larger mystery and focuses on something more meaningful. Ali tells Coop that he keeps chasing normalcy even though his life has permanently shifted away from it. The advice lands because it speaks to the entire season. Coop continuously tries to restore order, but every attempt only creates another mess.

Meanwhile, Barney’s personal life takes another hit when Grace confronts him. By the time she drives away and leaves him stranded, it becomes clear that his problems extend far beyond Ashe’s disappearance.

More importantly, DeMille throws a new suspect into the kidnapping mystery by implying Cricket may have orchestrated Coop’s abduction. Well, the series has spent too much time emphasizing the importance of the Excelsior account for the kidnapping plot to simply abandon it. If DeMille is telling the truth, Season 3 could reveal that Cricket’s interests were far more extensive than anyone realized.

The second and far more important development arrives during the closing moments. Throughout the finale, Coop, Barney, and Nick convince themselves that Ashe’s body will remain hidden.
