Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains spoilers for X-Men ’97 Season 2 Episode 5.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Episode 5 picks up the post-credits thread from last week and sends Wolverine back to the place that made him. Logan reassembles Team X, consisting of Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Maverick, and Garrison Kane, along with Morph, for a raid on the Weapon X compound.

He pitched it to them as a mission to shut down Dr. Cornelius’s illegal experiments. What they find instead is a facility overrun by an alien infestation, a body count that climbs fast, and a stack of DVDs hiding the project’s ugliest secret.

In the last episode’s post-credits scene, we see Wolverine getting a Weapon X file from Captain America. When Cap warns him about not taking on the mission alone, he teases that he has the perfect team for the mission. We meet the team here, along with Morph, who has a significant role in this episode.

It reunites Logan with his old team, including his brother Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike (Yuriko), Maverick, and Garrison Kane. He tells them that Dr. Cornelius has resurfaced with his illegal experiments. Every member of this Team X has a personal score to settle with the man who experimented on them with adamantium.

Their trash-talking ride is interrupted by some flying species ramming into their aircraft, bringing it down. Kane doesn’t walk away from the wreck. The survivors fight through more of the species and push into the underground compound and find it littered with corpses. Cornelius is still alive, but barely himself. He’s already been infected, and he transforms in front of them into one of the Brood, the alien-like parasite from Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men run.

After ripping apart the alien Cornelius, the team splits. Logan and Maverick head for the vehicle bay while Morph, Deathstrike, and Sabretooth go looking for the generator room. It’s the second group that stumbles onto the episode’s title object. A shelf of DVDs labelled with names that will make longtime readers sit up, Fantomex and the Winter Soldier among them.

They play the disc marked XVIII, and Cornelius’s own recordings lay out the experiment in his words. The Brood are a hive species with a shared psyche and a single imperative of survival. They could not be tamed. And crucially, no Brood host has ever survived the adamantium bonding process.

Morph does the math before anyone else. A hive that mates and hunts for a stronger host has an obvious target in this building, and it’s the man with the healing factor. Word comes that Logan and Maverick are under attack, and by the time the others reach the adamantium chamber, it’s too late. Wolverine has been infected and turned.

He is now a hulking Brood-Logan hybrid that recreates Marc Silvestri’s cover for Uncanny X-Men #234 almost beat for beat. The fight that follows is brutal and costly. Then the episode’s other reveal thaws out. Omega Red, apparently kept on ice at Weapon X, wakes up and throws himself at monster-Logan.

It’s less a rescue than a collision of two problems, but it buys Morph, Deathstrike, and Sabretooth the window they need to get clear. Outside, the argument gets ugly. Morph wants to save Logan. Sabretooth and Deathstrike aren’t convinced there’s anything left to save, and they’ve worked out what Morph hasn’t wanted to say aloud.

Logan was heading for the adamantium chamber all along. The mission was never about Cornelius. Nevertheless, Morph comes up with a brilliant plan to save Logan.

Did Wolverine Succeed in His Mission?

Morph plans to lure the beast into the adamantium chamber, which the Brood can’t survive, but Logan can. He shifts into Cyclops to bait him, then into Jean Grey to reach the human inside him. Omega Red jumps the three of them mid-plan, but the chamber does its work.

Logan comes out the other side with metal claws, saying, “I’m back, baby.” He brutally attacks Omega Red, buying time for the team to escape. As the villain is stopped by Logan and the falling debris, Team X escapes the compound on a plane. The compound detonates behind them.

Logan clearly succeeds in his mission. But it also came with a cost. He lied to a friend to do it, and Morph’s silence on the ride home says everything the episode’s closing shot of those claws doesn’t.

Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs is a tightly built under siege thriller, and it’s the most time the show has ever given Morph. But it’s also the first episode of the season that feels rushed. It also feels more like a filler episode. However, fans hope that the rest of the episodes this season make sense of this storyline. It remains the best X-Men adaptation ever, a compliment shared by Callie Hanna of FW in our review of X-Men ’97 Season 2.
