Will ‘Propeller One-Way Night Coach’ Get a Sequel? Apple TV’s Latest Streaming Hit Starring John Travolta

Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, John Travolta’s cinematic passion project, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, made its global streaming debut on Apple TV+. Released globally on May 29, the film has surprisingly made its mark on the streaming chart by taking the #1 spot on the top movies on Apple TV this week, according to Flix Patrol. 

The ranking is surprising, given that it has not been received well by the critics. Currently, it has a 54% Tomatometer score against 28 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb. Yet, its performance on streaming charts says otherwise. 

This massive wave of viewership has ignited speculation regarding a possible sequel. Unfortunately, Apple TV+ has not greenlit a sequel. Because the narrative serves as a self-contained, retrospective fable, any future expansion remains entirely unconfirmed by the studio. Travolta has also not announced plans for a sequel. 

John Travolta’s Propeller One-Way Night Coach is Based on His Own Book

Propeller One-Way Night Coach has been written, directed, narrated, and produced by John Travolta himself. The movie is adapted from a children’s book that Travolta published in 1997 under the same title, written and illustrated by him.

Reportedly, both the book and its film adaptation are inspired by Travolta’s childhood and his lifelong love for planes (via Decider). His passion project, Travolta waited decades for the film to come to fruition, afraid that if somebody else were involved, the film might turn out to be their version (via Entertainment Weekly). 

Set during the golden age of flight, the narrative follows an eight-year-old airplane enthusiast named Jeff (played by newcomer Clark Shotwell) and his actress mother, Helen (Kelly Eviston-Quinnett), as they embark on a cross-country odyssey from Newark to Hollywood.

For Travolta, who has held a commercial pilot’s license since the age of 22 and famously owns a fleet of aircraft, this film marks his official directorial debut. Feeling more like a personal memoir, the film feels sincere and honest.
