Wife of Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy allegedly shot by couple’s son

She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, but as of Monday morning, she was in stable condition

The son of Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested for allegedly shooting his mother, Eric’s wife, in the family’s Virginia home.

Elijah Bieniemy, 27, is facing charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling, the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Monday.

He was taken to Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting just after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday and found an “adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” police said.

She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, but as of Monday morning, she was in stable condition, ESPN reported.

The victim was Mia Bieniemy, Elijah’s mother and Eric’s wife, according to the outlet.

The Chiefs said in a statement to the Toronto Sun that they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.”

The organization added: “Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

What Coach Reid had to say about the incident

Eric was with the Chiefs at their practice facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier in the day but left the team to support his family, per ESPN.

He also did not attend Monday’s practice.

Head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday: “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Reid said he learned about the shooting on Sunday evening.

“I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes,” he commented.

“Eric will work through it,” Reid continued, noting that there is no timetable for Bieniemy to return to the team.

“He’s got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed. We’ll let time take care of it from there.”

He added: “There’s always a blessing in there somewhere. I know things will work out.”

Eric was with the Chiefs from 2013 to 2022, serving as running backs coach before he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018.

He left K.C. for brief stints with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears and UCLA Bruins before returning to the Chiefs in January, replacing Matt Nagy.

Reid confirmed that Mia is “stable” while calling her “a saint.” He also detailed that the couple’s other son, Eric Jr., is safe and was unharmed.

“We all know that, the people that know her. One of God’s good blessings right there. A really special person,” he described.

He added: “Time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. But it will all work out in the long run.”
