Why Is Hazbin Hotel Ending After Season 5? Everything We Know So Far

Prime Video has picked up Hazbin Hotel for a fifth and final season, granting the wishes of its makers. The announcement came at the LVL UP Expo on Saturday (via Amazon MGM Studios). Interestingly, the show has aired only two seasons so far, with a third and fourth season order already in place.

YouTuber Vivienne Medrano, aka VivziePop, released a pilot episode for an animated show on her channel on October 28, 2019. Hazbin Hotel began with 117 million views on Medrano’s channel, and shortly thereafter, it was picked up for a TV series by A24 in a landmark move. The production was difficult for both the crew and A24, especially without a distributor.

It was only in late 2023 that Prime Video gave a 2-season order for the animated series. The first season was released in January 2024, five years after the pilot was released on Medrano’s channel. After the first season, the streamer announced in July 2024 that the show had been renewed for a third and fourth season (via @HellaversePrime/X).

So, why renew Season 5 now, and why is it the final season of the show? It all comes down to how Medrano planned out her story. During an interview with Polygon, she confirmed that she planned Hazbin Hotel as a five-season show. It appears that Prime Video gave her what she wanted with the latest announcement, especially after her comments on Season 1. While Medrano loved the first season, it was not a great experience for her. She shared:

I love season 1 to death, but season 1 was made in a vacuum. We weren’t sure if the show would continue. We had a limited amount of episodes, and a very limited amount of runtime. I knew exactly what I wanted that first-season story to be, and it was very, very hard to cram it all into that first season. I’m very proud of what we did — we pulled off something borderline-impossible.

However, Season 2 turned out to be a completely different experience after Prime Video’s backing. She shared, “Season 2 is what the show was meant to be. Visually, pacing-wise, scale-wise, narrative-wise, it’s just a level up from season 1.” She shared that the second season was “allowed to be a full season of television.”

Had the streamer not greenlit a fifth season before the production of Season 4, Medrano would likely have had to go through all that stress again. Creating Season 4 without knowing whether she could finish her story might have led to the same issues faced during Season 1.

Hazbin Hotel Season 5 Release Date: How Many Seasons Are Out?

It is difficult to predict a release date for Hazbin Hotel Season 5 at this time. One reason is that the show has only aired two out of its five greenlit seasons. And the second season aired only five months back on the streamer. The order for Seasons 1 & 2 came in November 2023, by which time the first season’s production was already completed.

It meant that it took nearly two years for the creators to bring a second season to the screen. Work on the third and fourth seasons is already ongoing, so we can expect the third season to be released later this year or in early 2027.

By this estimated calculation, fans can expect to see Hazbin Hotel Season 5 at the earliest by 2028. Medrano is also simultaneously working on the spinoff show, Helluva Boss, and another animated series, Homestuck. So, it will be some time before we see the newly announced season on screen.

Hazbin Hotel Season 5 Cast: Who Are Voicing the Roles?

Hazbin Hotel Season 5 will continue with its voice cast from earlier seasons. Interestingly, Vivienne Medrano’s original pilot had a very different set of voice cast, who were all replaced when A24 took on the project. It brought in more recognizable names to voice the characters. Erika Henningsen, the voice of Cady Heron in the Mean Girls Broadway, plays the central character, Charlie Morningstar (via IMDb).

Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame voices Vaggi, while Alex Brightman, Keith David, Kimiko Glenn, Blake Roman, Amir Talai, and Christian Borle voice the other main characters. All of these actors are expected to continue with their roles for all five seasons. The show also has a set of recurring characters, who will also possibly return to Seasons 3, 4, and 5.

Hazbin Hotel Season 5 Plot: What to Expect?

Hazbin Hotel‘s controversial plot has been discussed widely on online platforms. In the show, Charlie Morningstar, the Princess of Hell, is not happy with the way Heaven deals with the overpopulation problem in Hell. Charlie wants to stop Extermination, a process in which the angels from Heaven called Exorcists arrive in Hell for an annual genocidal purge to kill the sinners.

She opens the titular hotel to rehabilitate the sinners, who can then redeem themselves and check out into Heaven. Everyone mocks her ridiculous plan, but she moves forward with the help of her partner, Vaggi, and her first patron, Angel Dust. She also gets assistance from the powerful Radio Demon, who doesn’t see her vision but joins in nevertheless.

Conservative audiences were disappointed with the way the show depicted demons as the good guys and angels in a negative light. The graphic nature of the show, along with the show’s queerness, was also criticized by these audiences. However, the show had issues other than the allegedly blasphemous content.

While the show’s premise sounded unique, many fans were disappointed with how cliched it looked on screen. The adult themes were handled too simply, with the show relying on surface-level commentary. The pacing issue has been resolved largely in Season 2, but fans expect much better in the upcoming seasons.

Fans expect the show to produce much better output, now that it has gotten what it wanted. By the fifth season, we would definitely like to see fewer rants from fans about the arc development of certain characters in the show.

Where to Stream Hazbin Hotel?

The episodes of the first and second seasons are now available for streaming on Prime Video. The initial pilot of the show, titled That’s Entertainment, is available for streaming on YouTube. The upcoming seasons of the show will also arrive on the same streamer.

Vivienne Medrano’s other Hellaverse project, Helluva Boss, aired its first two seasons on YouTube. However, the third and fourth seasons will now first drop on Prime Video before subsequently releasing on YouTube.
