Christa Pike‘s legal reps are taking center stage after her failed execution.
The attorneys representing the convicted murderer called for an emergency court hearing to argue the future of the case. This comes about a week after she survived two doses of a lethal drug injected into her system on September 30.
Christa Pike has been on death row since she was incarcerated for first-degree murder and conspiracy in 1996. The charges stem from her actions in successfully luring and murdering her then 19-year-old Job Corps classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1995.
Christa Pike’s Lawyers Return To Court As Questions Swirl Over Failed Execution
Tennessee Department of Correction/UPI Newscom/ MEGAPike’s lawyers have continued their legal fight for her after she surprisingly survived Tennessee’s attempt to carry out the death penalty on her last month. The attorneys stood at the center of the courtroom on Wednesday morning for an emergency court hearing on the case.
The legal representatives stood in court on October 7 for a status conference tied to an emergency motion filed after the botched execution. They have asked the court to preserve evidence connected to the execution attempt, according to the livestream footage from TMZ.
Pike’s legal team argued that the court still has the authority to intervene as the case moves forward. They have also further requested that their client’s death sentence be commuted while awaiting what comes next, since the execution went wrong.
Inside The Outcome Of The 50-Year-Old’s Attempted Execution
Pike’s survival after two doses of lethal injection prompted current Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to pull the plug on the state’s remaining executions for the year while investigations are ongoing to shed light on what went wrong.
The death row inmate was supposed to be the first woman the state of Tennessee would be executing in over 200 years. She was also the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States and the youngest person on Tennessee’s death row.
Pike was reportedly given two doses of pentobarbital and then rushed from prison to a Nashville hospital after the drug did not take effect in her system. Rather than slipping into unconsciousness, she continued speaking, insisting that her arm was “burning and hurting.”

Questions About Christa Pike’s Survival Keep Swirling
The burning question on many minds is: How did Pike survive? Although explicit details of the execution process remain unrevealed as official investigations continue, medical experts have weighed in.
Dr. Jonathan I. Groner, a retired pediatric general surgeon at Ohio State University College of Medicine who has studied lethal injections, said that the 5-gram dose of pentobarbital used in executions is many times the amount that should put someone in a medical coma.
“The fact that she woke, on one hand, says she got really little of it into her system. So that’s kind of shocking,” Groner said. “It says how badly they botched the execution.”
According to the Houston Chronicle, the doctor speculated that Pike’s veins could have been fragile and burst, causing the drug to seep into the surrounding tissue instead of flowing through the bloodstream, or the IV might have been placed improperly.
Michaela Almgren, a South Carolina pharmacist and educator who has consulted on several lethal injection cases, also suggested that another reason could be that the drug was of low quality.
What The Death Row Inmate Said Before And During Her Failed Execution
According to a previous release from The Blast, Pike had her heart set already on her death. When asked for her final words, she said that she was “at peace [and] ready to go.”
“I just want to say that I’m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life, and that is with love,” she added.
During the execution, she reportedly questioned the injection site on her arm, which she claimed was “burning and hurting,” asking, “Does this happen like that?”
Pike also reportedly stated that her arm felt like it was about to burst open, and she could later be heard snoring from the execution room before she was rushed to the hospital.
Before she was taken out for medical intervention, it was confirmed that Pike was conscious and still had a heartbeat, proving that the short-acting barbiturate that calms the nervous system and slows down brain activity failed to take effect.
Christa Pike Reportedly Revealed Her Fears In The Weeks Leading To Her Execution
Pike currently remains hospitalized and has a long recovery ahead of her, according to her attorneys. She is, however, awake and talking and no longer in critical condition.
The Blast shared that the convicted murderer had shared her fears about the possibility of a botched execution. She described the potential experience as her absolute “worst nightmare,” and even requested a different execution method.
Amid voicing her concerns, she requested to die by an all-female firing squad instead of by hanging, but the court denied her plea. Pike stated that she did not have “good veins,” expressing her worries about the central line to deliver the drug.
Pike highlighted a fellow death row inmate who had suffered the fate of a failed execution. “Tony Carruthers lived out my worst nightmare, detail for detail, and I don’t want to go through that,” she said.
