Glen Powell is pulling back the curtains on a time in his life when he was at an all-time low.
The iconic Hollywood star recalled when he was hit with devastating medical news that put the lives of both his parents on the line. Saving them became his utmost priority as he stretched himself thin to ensure Cindy and Glen Powell Sr. overcame cancer.
Glen Powell’s parents are proud cheerleaders of their son’s success. They have since become familiar faces in the industry and often show support for their son at public events.
Glen Powell Recalls The Heavy Feeling Of His Parents’ Cancer Diagnosis That Left Him Desperate
RW/MediaPunch / MEGADealing with ill health is no easy task, much less having both parents suffering from similar diseases. Powell found himself in a tight spot after he received his parents’ simultaneous cancer diagnosis. The actor recalled his desperate efforts to ensure his parents made a full recovery and returned to good health.
This happened less than two decades ago, when the Hollywood star was only 24. His mother’s case was particularly severe, and the thought of the inevitable crossed his mind.
Speaking to Esquire for his October/November cover story, Powell shared that he remembers “exactly where I was getting that news. And how I felt, and how she felt at that time.”
The news of their cancer diagnosis couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the Powell family did not have enough finances to cover the costs of treatment.
At the time, Cindy was a stay-at-home mom while Glen Sr. was an executive coach. They had limited treatment options, as the pair were not exactly wealthy, and the “Spy Kids 3” star had yet to make his big break in the industry.
The Actor’s Parents’ Health Battle Put Him Through The Wringer
Jeffrey Mayer/JTMPhotos, Int’l. / MEGAPowell’s desperation for help and the strong desire to ensure he did not lose his parents to the horrible disease led him to cold-call several people and ask for assistance. In his words, “I was like a telemarketer, calling everyone I knew who could have donated to a hospital ever.”
Speaking further with the magazine, the movie star said, “I was poor, and I had nothing going on. I had no resources to help my mom. And I know people who, because they couldn’t get good care, their parents died.”
The “Anyone But You” actor shared that he drew inspiration from that difficult time to seek financial stability for the future. His parents’ health journey was all the financial motivation he needed. Years later, when Cindy and Glen Sr. had another health challenge, money was not an issue as Powell had made a name for himself in the industry and could fully fund their treatment.

Cindy And Glen Sr. Played Pivotal Roles In Glen Powell’s Career
AdMedia /MediaPunch / MEGAPowell was raised in Austin, Texas, a city he says shaped his respect for artistic pursuits. In 2023, he told Austin Monthly that his parents enrolled him in acting classes after he expressed his interest in movies.
The couple also encouraged their son’s creativity from a young age, along with other family members who developed his love for martial arts, a skill that helped him land a role in “The Expendables 3.” In a separate interview, Powell shared that he loved theater-hopping and watching movies with his dad as a kid.
His father created a remarkable childhood memory for the actor by showing him the 1986 classic “Top Gun,” unaware that his son would star in the sequel years later. “I was 10 years old, and I remember him handing me the VHS and saying, ‘Hey man, we’re gonna watch Top Gun,'” the movie star previously recalled.
The TV Star’s Parents Have Made Appearances In His Movies
Cindy and Glen Sr. have played extras on a handful of his movies. Powell, in a 2024 appearance on the “Today” show, said that he thinks his mom and dad have been in “every single one” of his movies.
He went on to recount the different roles they had played on screen, telling host Hoda Kotb that their on-screen scene appearances began quite early in his career. “They’ve made it in since ‘Spy Kids [3-D: Game Over],'” he said before adding, “They’re right behind Daisy Edgar-Jones and I,” highlighting Cindy and Glen Sr. at a rodeo scene in “Twisters.”
HuffPost reported that the couple also appeared in “Anyone But You” as passengers on an airplane. Powell praised his father as a “real method actor” because he acted as if he were fast asleep while his co-star, Sydney Sweeney, did “gymnastics” over his face. Cindy, meanwhile, had her moment sitting across the aisle on the aircraft.
Glen Powell’s Parents Also Troll Their Son
Steven Bergman/AFF-USA.COM / MEGA Cindy and Glen Sr. not only make cameos in his films but also show support for their son with peak sense of humor. The couple trolled the actor at his “Hit Man” screening two years ago. They held up DIY cardboard signs that read “Stop trying to make Glen Powell happen” and “It’s never gonna happen.”
They also showed up at the TODAY plaza in July 2024 with more hilarious signs. Cindy held one white cardboard sign with the words boldly written in black ink that read “I changed Glen Powell’s diapers,” while the executive coach’s sign read “Glenn Powell is a force of nature.”
The movie star had a good laugh after spotting his parents in the crowd with their signs. Just as Powell’s parents have made a humor-fueled tradition of trolling him, he has made a sweet-centered tradition of bringing them to major red carpet events.
The “Top Gun” star stepped out with Cindy and Glen Sr. for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. ABC News shared photos of the actor and his parents beaming as they posed for photos on the red carpet.
