House of the Dragon Season 3 is bringing a new fan-favorite character from the pages of Fire & Blood to the screen. Alysanne Blackwood, better known as the fierce “Black Aly,” is set to join Team Black as the brutal Targaryen civil war intensifies.

The prequel’s latest trailer has already unveiled a first look at the formidable new warrior portrayed by Australian actress Annie Shapero. As anticipation builds for Season 3, fans will be eager to learn more about Black Aly and why her debut is such a major moment for the series.

Alysanne Blackwood’s Role In The Dance of the Dragons, Explained

The latest trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 shared a glimpse of Shapero as Black Aly dressed for battle. In George R.R. Martin’s book, she is a skilled archer and warrior from House Blackwood. She’s also the sister of Lord Samwell Blackwood, who died in the Battle at the Burning Mill, and the aunt of young Lord Benjicot Blackwood.

According to the lore, Black Aly was just sixteen when her house pledged its support to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons. As the war continued, she became one of Team Black’s most capable military leaders.

She commanded three hundred Riverlands archers during the Battle of the Kingsroad, where her forces helped defeat the Green army led by Lord Borros Baratheon. After the victory, she marched with the Riverlords toward King’s Landing, only to discover that King Aegon II had already died and the city had surrendered.

It seems the series will condense the timeline again as the Battle of the Kingsroad happens towards the end of the civil war. Nonetheless, Black Aly’s addition to the cast is only one sign that the show is preparing to adapt storylines that extend beyond the main battles of the Dance of the Dragons.

Fans who have read the book know that she remains an important figure even after the Civil War ends. In fact, she is one of the few commanders who fought from beginning to end. With Black Aly aiding Rhaenyra’s cause, she is expected to become Season 3’s new fan-favorite heroine, especially since she’s notable for her fearless spirit and sharp tongue.

Black Aly’s Story Could Extend Into House of the Dragon Season 4

Black Aly’s journey in House of the Dragon may continue through the final season. If the show follows George R. R. Martin’s story, we will likely see her play a major role in restoring peace to the realm.

After the death of Aegon II, Lord Cregan Stark arrived in King’s Landing and began a brutal purge of those he believed were responsible for the king’s poisoning, an episode that later became known as the “Hour of the Wolf.”

During this turbulent time, he detained several powerful figures, including Lord Corlys Velaryon. Corlys was ultimately spared, however, through a royal pardon issued by the young King Aegon III. Although Cregan had the authority to ignore the pardon, he chose not to execute Corlys, a decision later attributed to a private bargain with Black Aly.

According to Mushroom’s account, she persuaded Cregan to honor the pardon in exchange for her hand in marriage, helping to ease tensions and restore stability after the civil war.

Because the Hour of the Wolf will most likely conclude the series, there is a strong chance that Black Aly will remain part of the story until the final episode.
