Where is Caine in Gothic 1 Remake? The Lost Apprentice Quest Guide

Gothic 1 Remake features a character who will make you run in circles if you don’t have the proper tips and tricks up your sleeve. Obviously, we’re talking about Caine. He’s one of the first mysteries you’ll investigate in the Swamp Camp.

The trick is that Caine himself isn’t in the Swamp Camp at all by the time you hear about him. So you have to follow his trail to the Old Camp and into a flooded mine.

Finding Caine in Gothic 1 Remake Is Difficult, but Not Impossible

Caine is at the heart of the Lost Apprentice side quest in Gothic 1 Remake. We agree the game does a great job of hiding him where you’d least expect. Absolutely not in the Swamp Camp at all, but deep inside an Abandoned Mine near the Old Camp.

Keep in mind that it won’t matter which of the three camps you joined, Caine will always end up near the Old Camp. The quest starts at the Swamp Camp with the Brotherhood. However, you’ll finish it in a flooded, undead-infested shaft far to the west.

The Lost Apprentice Quest Walkthrough

The quest is framed as a simple missing-person job. However, it’s much more than that. The Lost Apprentice actually teaches you how Gothic 1 Remake’s factions, camps, and mines connect.

Start in the Swamp Camp: talk to Cor Kalom to accept the Lost Apprentice and learn that his apprentice Caine has vanished. Step outside, speak with the Templar near his chamber, then head down to the lower camp.

• Talk to the Novices and Nyras outside Caine’s hut.

• Go inside the hut and grab the Abandoned Mine drawing/map from the table.

Next, find Lester near the Swamp Camp entrance and mention the drawing so he confirms Caine was headed toward an old mine near the Old Camp. Travel back to the Old Camp, leave through the main gate, and cross the large stone bridge.

• Take the right-hand path after the bridge.

• Move toward the next bridge, then duck under it and turn right.

• You’ll see the Abandoned Mine entrance guarded by Orry. You can talk or pay to gain entry.

Inside the mine, follow the tracks until you reach a low tunnel. Crouch through it and continue. Eventually, you’ll hit a broad underground lake; this is the key puzzle area.

• Dive to the bottom of the lake and take the Detached Winch.

• Surface on the far side, climb the ladder, and follow the wooden catwalk to the left.

• Install the winch on the nearby mechanism and turn it to open the underwater gate.

Drop back into the water, swim through the now-open gate, and surface again near a waterfall with ladders leading upward. Climb up and deal with the enemies in this section. After that, press on through more tunnels and another short swim against the current.

You’ll pass a caged door and enter a hallway that opens into a larger chamber with an Undead Orc guarding the way; kill it to clear the path. In the wide area beyond, you’ll finally find Caine’s corpse on the ground.

Interact with him to record his fate and update your journal. To wrap the quest up cleanly, just return to Raven near the Old Camp to report what you found.

After that, head back to the Swamp Camp and tell Cor Kalom that Caine is dead. That closes the Lost Apprentice, nets you Brotherhood favor and XP, and sets you up nicely for the rest of the swamp storyline.
