January serves a healthy dose of action as leading ladies are kicking ass this month. One that many are looking forward to is Nightbitch on Disney+. Amy Adams earned a Golden Globe nomination for her raw, unfiltered work in this film, and might even score an Oscar nod next month.

For those interested in action and comedy, Cameron Diaz returns to the big screen after a 11-year acting hiatus with the upcoming spy film Back in Action on Netflix, where she stars opposite Jamie Foxx.
Also on the streaming menu is a Channing Tatum entry in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice.

Show: XO, Kitty: Season 2
Air date: Jan. 16
Synopsis: After the drama Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart) caused in her first semester at KISS, this time she returns to Seoul for a new semester with a clean slate. But a letter from her mother’s past sends her on another investigation that will teach her that family and love are more complicated than she imagined.
Based on: The series is a spin-off of the To All the Boys film series (an adaptation of Jenny Han’s book trilogy, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.)
Why watch: The series has always been a lighthearted, coming-of-age binge session, with Anna Cathcart spearheading the teen comedy. Fans loved what she brought to the the To All the Boys film series. If season one was a wild ride, returning back to Seoul in season two for more teen drama is a no-brainer. Also, there’s special cameo too.

Film: Back in Action
Air date: Jan,. 17
Synopsis: Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) gave up their spy life over 15 years ago to start a family of their own. However, when their cover is blown they find themselves forced back into the world of espionage. The film also stars Kyle Chandler, Glenn Close and Andrew Scott, and is directed by Seth Gordon.
Why watch: Cameron Diaz returns to acting after a decade-long hiatus. Diaz and Foxx last starred together in Annie in 2014, but this time they’re bringing their comedic chops to the game.
Show: The Recruit: Season 2
Air date: Jan. 30
Synopsis: Trying to clear his head, CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) is ready for his next assignment. This time he enters the world of the South Korean spy trade, which puts him in a life-threatening espionage situation.
Why watch: The spy series isn’t a gritty, intense thriller but rather a witty, entertaining action-comedy that plays off Centineo’s strengths as an actor. It was also partly filmed in Vancouver.

Film: Unstoppable
Air date: Jan. 16
Synopsis: This film tells the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but his passion lies in wrestling. With the love and support of his mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez), Anthony fights to become an NCAA Champion, a journey that tests him both physically and mentally.
Based on: Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion by Anthony Robles
Why watch: Jharrel Jerome is the heart and soul of this film as he displays Robles’ unwavering resilience. He even earned the TIFF Tribute Performer Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards in 2024. For her part, Jennifer Lopez showcases her strength as a dramatic actress as his mother Judy.
Film: Blink Twice
Air date: Jan. 21
Synopsis: When Billionaire tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum) invites cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie), she has no idea what to expect upon arrival. The no-phones parties are wild, but when strange things start to happen, Frida has to search for the truth so she can make it out alive.
Why watch: The film marks Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut and it’s a gripping, nail-biting psychological thriller that doubles as a sharp exploration of trauma and healing.

Film: You’re Cordially Invited
Air date: Jan. 30
Synopsis: An unfortunate accident leads to two weddings being booked on the same day at the same venue. It is now up to the father of the bride (Will Ferrell) and sister of the other bride (Reese Witherspoon) to make the day a special one, especially as they go head-to-head to avoid chaos and destruction.
Why watch: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are comedic pros, playing to their own strengths, and it would be fun to watch a wedding disaster with these two taking charge.

Based on: The book Nightbitch by Rachel Yodler
Why watch: Amy Adams delivers a performance unlike anything you’ve ever seen – her Golden Globe nomination is well-deserved. This will make you want to call you mom or mother figures in your life.

Synopsis: On October 11, 1975, an ambitious group of young comedians and writers forever changed the history of television. The film follows the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. It stars Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, Kaia Gerber, Lamorne Morris, Dylan O’Brien, Cooper Hoffman, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Braun, J.K. Simmons, and Willem Dafoe.
Why watch: Jason Reitman captures the electric buzz that was in the air that night in the hours leading to the iconic show. The stacked cast and well-written script make this an entertaining watch.

Show: Severance Season 2
Air date: Jan. 17
Synopsis: Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, where the employees have surgically divided their memories between their work and personal lives for “work-life balance.” In season two, Mark and his friends learn the consequences of messing with the severance barrier, leading them down a chaotic path.
Why watch: The series has earned 14 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Fans have been waiting for three years for a second season, that’s expected to be darker and more mind-bending.

Film: Star Trek: Section 31
Air date: Jan. 24
Synopsis: Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou (a character she played on the hit series Star Trek: Discovery) who joins a secret division of Starfleet. While she is tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face her past.
Why watch: Whether you’re a fan of Star Trek or not, watching Michelle Yeoh in all her glory is reason enough to binge this.
