Paramedics and ski patrol attempted to save his life but he died in hospital.
It is believed poor visibility at the time lead the man into a terrain trap underneath one of the first lift towers of the Polar Peak lift, RCMP said.
Police described the trap as a naturally occurring sink hole about seven metres by nine metres wide and filled with loose and undisturbed snow.
Elk Valley RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.
