What Is the New ‘Stretchy’ Beetle Species Named After Luffy?

Scientists Fang-Shuo Hu and Alexey Solodovnikov of the Natural History Museum of Denmark wrote about this new beetle genus (via ZooKeys) in their research focused on the Ocypus group, a branch of rove beetles whose evolutionary history has confused scientists for so many years.

The research document reveals that the new genus was named Luffy because these beetles have extremely long and slender mandibles, antennae, and mouthparts. Their stretched appearance immediately reminded the researchers of Monkey D. Luffy, whose rubber-like body lets him extend his arms, legs, and other body parts in battle.

As of now, the paper reveals that there are two known species. The first one is Luffy schillhammeri, which was discovered in the broadleaf forests of Yunnan Province in China. Its species name is in honor of Dr. Harald Schillhammer for his major contributions to the study of rove beetles.

The second species, Luffy nika, was found in Louang Namtha in northern Laos. And as one can guess, its name comes from Luffy’s awakened Devil Fruit form, “Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika,” better known to fans as Gear 5. Surprisingly, the beetle even has white bands of hair across much of its body and wing cases, giving it a look that resembles Luffy’s white hairs and clothes in his Gear 5 – Nika form.

The discovery is much more than an anime reference. As the researchers wrote in their study, the genus exhibits a unique combination of characters intermediate between the Eucibdelus lineage and other members of the Ocypus group. That makes the discovery an important step toward understanding how these beetles evolved over millions of years.
