SUMMARY

  • Jesse Eisenberg played Lex Luthor in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and praised the role as "wonderfully written."
  • Other actors, like Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, also praised Zack Snyder's work, supporting the ‘Snyder Cut.’
  • Despite enjoying the role, Eisenberg admitted the poor reception of ‘Batman v Superman’ negatively affected his career.

The conversation around the superhero genre will always be incomplete if you don’t talk about Zack Snyder and his contribution to DC. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, you cannot deny that the filmmaker’s vision was quite refreshing when it came to bringing those superheroes to life. Whether it was Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg, or Gal Gadot, he did his best to do justice to these characters, even if some might not think so.

Of course, his actors have spoken up about working in the DCEU, including Jesse Eisenberg who played the role of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and had a cameo in Justice League. While he has nothing but praise for the film, he did admit that it hurt his career in a drastic way and he blames no one but himself.

Breaking down some of his most iconic characters with GQ, there was no way Lex Luthor was going to be skipped. While Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal has received mixed reviews, there are many who believe that this was one of the best depictions of the villain.

He was first seen as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). Talking about the role, Eisenberg had a lot to say about it all and it was all good.

He stated that his part in the film was “wonderfully written and special” and that he “loved doing it.” Talking about the intimate emotional experience he had despite working on a multi-million dollar set and in front of a green screen, Eisenberg said,

Typically you’re sitting in front of a camera and you’re doing scene work and you’re thinking about your character’s inner life and your emotional experience. That doesn’t really change if there’s a huge green screen and a Styrofoam bat cave behind you. The job is the same, which is this very kind of, like, intimate emotional experience.

He also praised the artisans involved in crafting Dawn of Justice who brought every set piece, prop, and painting to perfection. Clearly, Eisenberg loved his time on Zack Snyder’s set.

He wasn’t the only DCEU actor, though. Henry Cavill once told Fox 5 that he “really enjoyed” working on the Snyder Cut and thought that “it was a wonderful way of Zack getting his version of the story out, and important to do too.” He added that there was a “wonderful tenderness” to the movie which he considers “essential” for Superman’s representation.

Gal Gadot also vouched for the Snyder Cut when she tweeted “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut”, (via IGN) all the way back in 2019.

Despite his praise for the movie, he once admitted that BvS simply didn’t result in a positive aftermath for himself. As we all know, the film was met with poor reviews and harsh criticism and unfortunately, Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor was dragged into the mess.

The actor sat down on the Armchair Expert podcast where he opened up about it all. He stated,

I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received. I’ve never said this before, and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public.

He went on to add that he blames no one but himself for the criticism he received, stating,

And I loved the movie, doing it and everything. So I feel just myself to blame. I’m not like they did me wrong. No. I’m like, ‘Oh, I guess I did something wrong there.’

While Eisenberg cherishes his role and the opportunity he had playing Lex Luthor, he candidly acknowledges the impact criticism had on him and owns his part in the outcome with humility.
