Last month, Eddie Murphy became the 51st recipient of the esteemed AFI Life Achievement Award, joining the likes of Mel Brooks and Steve Martin as one of the few Comedy veterans to attain the prestige. To celebrate his five-decade-long career, which spans movies, stand-up comedy, and television, several industry figures took to the stage to honor his legacy, including Murphy’s Shrek costar, Mike Myers.
But instead of delivering a run-of-the-mill speech honoring his longtime co-star, Myers took to the stage in full Shrek makeup, which has also further heightened excitement for the upcoming installment in the Shrek franchise.
Mike Myers Honors Eddie Murphy in AFI Tribute as Shrek
Taking to X, Netflix unveiled a snippet from Mike Myers’ speech at the AFI tribute, which saw him donning full Shrek make-up. In a deadpan voice, the actor joked that when the AFI asks you to pay tribute to Murphy, the answer is yes, and when they tell you to wear the Shrek make-up, the answer is also yes.

Beyond this memorable moment, the exchange has only heightened anticipation for Shrek 5, which will reunite Murphy and Myers as Donkey and Shrek for the first time in nearly two decades. And the sequel may not be the last fans hear from the wisecracking sidekick, as last year, Murphy revealed that a Donkey spin-off was in development, adding (via ScreenRant):
We start in September on Donkey, we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be [released] three years from now. But we’re about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September.
While artists typically receive the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award in the twilight years of their careers, given the trajectory of Eddie Murphy’s career, it’s safe to say that the actor is still far from slowing down.
