Netflix just released its new romantic comedy, Voicemails for Isabelle, on June 19. Written and directed by Leah McKendrick, the film stars Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson as leads, as Jill and Wes, respectively.
If there is anything you need to know about the film, it is more emotional and a real tear-jerker from the get-go. If you haven’t cried for a long time, this is the perfect film to shed those tears and cry your heart out.
Well, the film begins with Jill and Izzy, two sisters who couldn’t have been any closer. Unfortunately, Izzy has cystic fibrosis and is forced to stay at home while Jill goes out and about. But the bond between them is thicker than blood, and Jill does the most outrageous things to keep her sister entertained and involved.
Time flies, and we see Jill leaving home for San Francisco to become a chef. But that does not change anything, for they remain connected, sending each other hilarious voicemails that feel a bit of both a hilarious podcast episode and a page out of a personal diary.
Voicemails for Isabelle really start when one day, Jill gets the news that Izzy has passed away.
How Do Jill and Wes Meet in Voicemails for Isabelle?

She is struggling as she has never before, and her work under Chef Bastien could not have been any more dreadful, for she is stuck cutting ‘kumquat’ for hours.
Unknown to Jill, her sister’s number has been reassigned to Wes, a real estate agent in Austin with trauma of his own. As he struggles with romantic relationships and his feelings, he randomly starts getting Jill’s voicemails, which she has been leaving for her dead sister. Initially hilarious, he is hooked and cannot stop listening to this stranger.
But when he hears that Izzy has died, he decides to travel all the way to San Francisco to meet her. While there, he listens to Jill’s voicemail and meets her just the way she wants, at her favorite spot in the city, asking her where to get breakfast tacos.
From then on, the film develops organically as the chemistry between them feels natural and easy.
What Happens in San Francisco?
Wes and Jill in the film | Credits: NetflixWes travels to San Francisco on the pretext of work, but his main aim is to get to know Jill. By listening to her voicemails, he actually tracks her to a viral podcast host’s live event, who stood Jill up after a one-night stand.
Soon, they are sitting in Jill’s favorite restaurant, Jose’s, having tacos. There, Wes asks her to explore the city with him, promising her that he is not looking for romance.
As they go around the city, it is obvious they have started to develop feelings for each other. While Jill struggles during her demanding work under Chef Bastien, Wes’s guilt grows bigger and bigger as he is unable to tell her the truth.
They end up kissing on Wes’s last day in the city, and Jill cooks for him, making him his late mother’s specialty, chicken pot pie with cornbread crust. Wes is deeply moved, and they later make out, but before things could go further, he backs out, feeling deeply guilty.
When he finally gets the truth out, that he has been receiving Jill’s voicemails, she has fallen asleep. He lays her on her bed and sleeps on the sofa. But Jill ends up coming back to him, an obvious sign that she is starting to trust again and is willing to open her heart to him.
Does Jill forgive Wes for Lying to her in Voicemails for Isabelle?
Zoey Deutch as Jill and Nick Robinson as Wes in the film | Credits: NetflixDuring their last day together, Wes asks Jill to accompany him to his best friends, Breeda and Andy’s wedding. He delivers a beautiful best man speech, all the while looking at Jill, and it seems he is starting to believe in love himself after struggling with commitment issues.
But it is at the wedding that things take a turn for the worse. Jill is wearing Wes’ coat and finds out Izzy’s number is active on his work phone. She immediately confronts him and is left heartbroken for trusting Wes and believing in him. The betrayal is deep, reopening the wound left behind by her sister’s passing.
What follows is an exploration of grief and heartbreak, as Jill is left alone, without her sister’s voicemails to comfort her. Even at work, she is unfairly treated and loses the newly opened baker position to a less competent chef. Frustrated, she quits.
During this time, she begins to reconnect with her parents, who come to surprise her on her birthday. She realizes that she has not been able to heal because she refuses to let her sister go. But letting her go feels like she is abandoning Izzy, letting her down.
After Wes sends her a voicemail, apologizing for his mistake, she decides to give him another chance.
How Does Voicemails for Isabelle End?
After quitting her job by the end of Voicemails for Isabelle, Jill’s parents give her Izzy’s college fund and encourage her to follow her dream. After much trial and error, she opens her own food truck with the help of her colleague, and it is an immediate success.
Meanwhile, Wes is struggling, and for the first time, he realizes that he is truly in love. He even asks his friend to restore Izzy’s voicemails, which accidentally got deleted.
On New Year’s Eve, he sends Jill a funny and honest voicemail, asking her to meet at Jose’s for tacos if she is willing to give him another chance. While he waits for her reply, his friends show up and force him to go to the restaurant.
Meanwhile, Jill decides to give Wes another chance when she is relistening to Izzy’s voicemails, where her sister tells her to be brave. Jill is eating tacos when Wes shows up. He apologizes sincerely and tells her that she might need a man, but he certainly needs her. This time, their reunion is honest and genuine, and both let go of the past and embrace the new possibilities.
At the end of Voicemails for Isabelle, the two are at a park. Both of them call Izzy’s number, sending her voicemails: Wes asking Izzy’s permission to ask Jill to move in with him, and Jill sending her the last voicemail, ready to begin a new chapter in their life. As they dance together to Izzy and Jill’s favorite song, Dancing on My Own by Robyn, it is obvious that they are meant to be.
Voicemails for Isabelle is less about romance and comedy and more about healing and grief. Both Jill and Wes have suffered unbearable losses, but together they learn to let go and confront reality. They teach each other to move on and continue, while understanding that some wounds may never heal, but that you learn to live with them.
